Best plasterboard plugs to hang heavy mirror

A bit late as usual, but although I always use the expanding wall anchors recommended, I was doing some work with a chap who fits large display panels, and he swore by Gripit plasterboard fixings as they spread the load much better in the plasterboard. Your 18kg mirror hardly needs it, but if it...

    best small wall plugs

Yes, enough weight at any angle other than lateral to the screw. If you look at the holes after the curtain rails come down, the top ones have been pulled out as the bracket rotates, and the bottom one then re-angles expanding it's hole and drags out diagonally. Direct lateral force on a...

    best small wall plugs

It's a bit late to comment on this, but for future reference, given the 1/2" of plaster and solid brick behind and the 5mm screw limit, I would either use the strips of cut to length wall plug, or 1.5/2 plugs to get the extra depth right into the brick. Drill your 6mm hole 65mm deep (for a 60mm...

    best small wall plugs

Actually, if you think of a loaded shelf on a right angled bracket, the biggest problem is the rotational force on the bracket which is pulling the top screws directly out of the wall rotating around the bottom screw. The lateral force on the screws is only relevant if the hole is to big, wall...

Mortar for lime and rubble wall

I know it's an old thread, but anyone coming here to get info about Lime mortar mixes should be aware : You must wear eye protection as well as gloves when using lime. The floating dust or occasional splash in your eye will eventually ruin your eyesight, even if it doesn't do so by burning your...

Changeover switching for Economy 7 immersion element

Looks like they need to sack the person writing their descriptions. Or pay them better.

Changeover switching for Economy 7 immersion element

I have mentioned this to CEF and, after first saying they were right as they got the information from the manufacturer, they have talked to the manufacturer and both CEF and M2 are now correcting their information.

Looks like this time You were right, and it was CEF and us that had it wrong.

Changeover switching for Economy 7 immersion element

Yes, that's the same as the CEF listing I was working from: only the front shown. I don't know where picture came from.

Changeover switching for Economy 7 immersion element

Good thing I didn't rely on that: entirely mis-described, just a standard intermediate switch not double pole 2 way at all . Luckily the Horstmann is a better bet anyway. Is this one of those things the U.S. and U.K. have different words for ? Mind you I relied on the CEF U.K. site to get it right.

    Borrowing an earth

Are you suggesting that I shouldn't be connecting a thinner cpc to the thicker one ? I assumed that the thinner one was a path from the light fitting to the thicker one which linked back to the breaker so inherently a safe option. I wouldn't consider connecting the thicker one back to the...

Changeover switching for Economy 7 immersion element

This time Winston1 is right; that's why I linked to that particular switch. I wasn't asking if it would work, just if there was any reason to not use it. Just a matter of terminology. Coming from an electronics side of things I was looking for DPDT (double pole double throw), and as mentioned in...

    Borrowing an earth

Yes, I felt the borrowing was a lesser evil than the un protected metal light fitting which has already been demonstrated to be at risk of breakage. Hopefully anyone removing the shower switch, (it's big and on the landing so you wouldn't take out the wiring and leave the switch) would notice...

    Borrowing an earth

Good point, I was thinking "Borrowed" as it was coming in from another part of the circuit, but I suppose if there is only one lighting circuit then it doesn't really matter where it connects to it.
