Got it, snapped all the extraneous plastic off the thing, then was finally able to unscrew the bit that was left - allowing me to achieve my goal of loosely refitting it until tomorrow rather than having to tie the overflow pipe up with string! (yes, I should have bought the waste kit first....)...

I'd just replace the quad LNB with a new one pointing in around the right direction, and use the signal meter in the menu on the box to tweak it once pointing about the right way (hint, your neighbours ones will be pointing in generally the right direction!) - less than 65 quid!
Doing it on a computer is cheating - who's to say you didn't just write it once, copy and paste, copy and paste, copy and paste etc. ie. 1,2,4,8...1024 and delete 24 of them (or some other iterative method that may or may not be quicker) 8)
What outgoing calls have you tried?
Have you tried calling 150 and seeing what happens. If this works, try using the prefix 1280 to force your call to be routed over the BT network, and see if you can call out then - if this works, and you still can't make outgoing calls without the prefix...
