    Andy has got it right, "go buy a new tap" and make sure it is a branded tap, so you can get spares. I've used SMR Bathrooms many times to buy bathroom taps, as the are cheap, fast and reliable. They sell Hudson Reed and Crosswater, both good quality and you can always get spares. Forget eBay...

    GazDaz is bang on, most modern tap use what is called a ceramic cartridge, this consist of two ceramic plates that run against each other. If you get grit between these two plates then the tap would feel rough to operate. Crosswater themselves should be able to supply replacements cartridges...
