Thanks - clearly not up on this plumbing game - what does an isolator look like?

It's only a small 1 bed flat....if i turn off water outside will that not effect the other 7 flats?

Am fixing up a new washing machine. I have switched off the mains - no cold water which is good and switched hot water taps on to drain the residual hot water in the pipes - the flow does not stop though (was on for hours). Any ideas??? It is a combi boiler.
