    Firring strips on joists

Hi, Yes, mine worked out OK, roof completed. I used nails (ring shank nails with nail gun) and wood glue, for extra hold and strength. I have a YT channel with a few videos and info, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPI8uTpbKKyAc_ZNckf_1nw?view_as=subscriber

Downlights in PIR (Kingspan) - cold roof

Hi, I wave a cold roof design, 170mm joists + 100mm down to 5mm furrings. I going to use 100mm PIR insulation, flush with the ceiling, leaving a ventilation gap above ranging from about 60mm to 160mm. I would like to have recessed LED downlights, but I get different opinions depending on who I...

New Garden room Build - Automation options

The devices at aliexpress look very interesting. I didn't want multiple Shelly's of Sonoff's, as each one need managing and takes an IP on the Wifi, which soon becomes very busy, this is why I wanted a centralised system.

New Garden room Build - Automation options

I am building a garden room and starting to think about the electrics. I currently automate a lot of my lights and switches, using quite a few Sonoff Mini’s flashed with Tasmota, MQTT to Home Assistant, and although this method works well, I am thinking of a more centralised solution. For...

    Firring strips on joists

Thanks for the pointers Woody. The first thing to say is this build is an odd shape, to make the most use of the space in my garden (see my Sketchup video ). The fall, and gutter, is towards the long wall at the back. The noggins and facia are for the overhang, so should follow the slope of the...

    Firring strips on joists

Hi, I am using firring strips running in the same direction of the joists, sitting directly on top of joists, see picture below. Just checking this is ok, and fixing with wood glue and screws?

Garden room build, odd shape, roof ideas

I have done a Skethup design of how I think it's going to work. As you can see, I have firings, which are cut from 100mm to 0mm over 6m, so a 1 in 60 fall, all different lengths, but producing the same level fall.

Apologies, I'm not sure I still understand you. You mean like this (the fall is from left to right in direction of joists)?

Garden room build, odd shape, roof ideas

Thanks big-all, although I'm not sure I understand some of your suggestions: "also iff the point is the high side then perhaps a 4x2 flat side on from perhaps 442 to 452mm may help" - Could you explain what you mean by this please? "also worth noting in a structure its often easier to have a...

Garden room build, odd shape, roof ideas

I am looking at the Spanning Tables for the roof joists (https://www.timberbeamcalculator.co.uk/span-table/flat-roof-joists?load=0.75&class=C24). Roof joists will run from left to right, same direction as floor joists, fall to the right, hedge side. There are 18 joists, 16" centres, all of...

Garden room build, odd shape, roof ideas

Hi Notch7, great suggestion, simple and effective, I didn't consider firings as I couldn't find them that long, as my longest joist in the middle is about 5.6m, if I could find them that long, I just then cut them down shorter and shorter as it goes along. Anyone know where can I get 5.6m...
