    usually black patches indicate condensation. are there are bricks or trickle vents in the house?

    usually the beads are fixed on with multi finish but i've seen them stuck on with scrim (mesh tape) or stapled on.

    Insulated plasterboard, should I bother?

    Thermal plasterboards are good to use for there insulation properties as well as sound proofing. They are being used more and more in new builds these days. Personally I would only use foil back boards in a bathroom or wet room. In every other room I would just double board the ceilings.
