I have never done it but I don't think much patience or practise is needed. The cheap ones are often a zinc-alloy and, as @Mottie, says, they are very susceptible to coming apart after being hit. That is far more important. The better ones are relatively thick steel.

@opps Thanks for the suggestion. I think it is too far off the wall for that to have worked, but I can't be sure as it is fixed now. Once I had gained confidence in drilling tiles I was able to fix a (white gloss painted) board of the right depth to the wall.
