Scotch (B)Lock Wire Connectors and 240v wiring

Rather than use SWA cable, given the temporary nature of the installation, how about using plastic conduit? It will protect the cable from UV and accidental damage from, say, a strimmer.

    Wiring Diagram Symbols

The symbols are not in the 4th edition of the Electricians Guide to the 17th Edition. I am 59 and in good health, but I am not arrogant enough to think that will always be so. The bungalow will still be in family ownership long after my brain has ceased to be reliable. I would like to make...

    Wiring Diagram Symbols

Not exactly definitive, from an accredited Standards organization, but if it's what the house wiring industry use, who am I to criticise?

    Wiring Diagram Symbols

I just want to know what the symbols are. For what is a one-off project, I can happily draw the diagrams by hand. Like we used to do before CAD.

    Wiring Diagram Symbols

I have a 17th Edition qualification and a lifetime in engineering. I am doing a full rewire on my dad's bungalow and I'm determined to do a 100% proper job. To adequately document the installation drawings are required showing the position of cables and wiring accessories, and schematic...

No insulation under the water tanks

Thanks for your quick responses. John - I get the point about the tanks themselves not freezing. The pipes are my main worry. They are well insulated, but they are well above the joists and lots of free space around them. My concern is, if it got down to zero when -3 outside while 16 sq feet...

No insulation under the water tanks

My house is a 1991 5 bed detached. It has concrete roof tiles with sarking under and factory made roof trusses. The header tanks for domestic hot water and the gas fired central heating are installed on a 4 foot square platform, about 18" above the ceiling joists. All this is as originally...

Fitting a new attic floorbeam in a Victorian house

We want to strengthen the floor in the attic so more of it can be used as habitable space. We have had a floor beam specified by a structural engineer. He states that the beam should be taken into (ie supported by) the walls. This means knocking a 6 x 6 x 6 inch hole in one wall and a 6 x 6...
