Connecting a garage to house with TT using buried SWA

The houses in our street are all supplied with a pair of overhead wires on wooden poles. I think a TN-C-S supply is unlikely in the near future, it would require a substantial amout of work and investement by the supplier. I am happy to call in a pro, but the two electricians I have...

Connecting a garage to house with TT using buried SWA

Hi, The main board at the house is an ancient fuse box with a single 30Ma RCD. It is mounted in the meter box which is mounted on the outside of the house. I would love to see it replaced but alas this has caused some ... difficulty  . I have asked two electricians about this and...

Connecting a garage to house with TT using buried SWA

ok, fair point. I think I read somewhere a 450mm trench with a tape at 150mm, then... any ideas on the question of linking two TT systems together? The multiple earth electrode article already mentioned uses multiple electrodes to decrease Ze, but assumes a single earth point on the...

Connecting a garage to house with TT using buried SWA

Hi, I hope someone can help me out here. I have tried to find the answers to this in the wiki and in past threads, but can't find the answers for when the house is wired TT. I have a garage with RCD and MCBs. It is currently linked to the house with an overhead cable. The house is a TT...

I certainly wasn't implying that! I didn't doubt his competence, just his enthusiasm for the less than... straightforward

He was a youngish chap, mid twenties maybe - probably not long out of college. I suspect he was probably fully qualified and being relatively freshly trained probably knew all the regulations very well, but I got the impression that his idea of fun was following around kitchen companies wiring...

1960s/70s wiring - does these automatically mean a rewire?

It looks about 6mm but I expect it is some imperial equivalent. It has the wrong colur, too (just green rather than yellow / green) but main problem is the top of the electrode is now buried under concrete with just the wire poking out... Steve

1960s/70s wiring - does these automatically mean a rewire?

Thanks very much for all the replies. A bit of clarification: The house is wired with 7/0.029 in the ring mains. The lighting circuits are twin and earth, each metal box being earthed (I checked when I changed the light switches as they are brass) and they look like 1mm so I presume are...

1960s/70s wiring - does these automatically mean a rewire?

Hi, I have a rather long question, but to save boring you good people, I'll ask it in easy nibbles  My house was built in about 1969/1970. The fuse box definately needs replacing and so does the earth electrode (it is a TT system). Although I am capable of doing this myself I am...
