Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

OK, so you guys have sold me on the whole weather compensation thing. If I wanted to fit one - can I? Is it a matter of buying a controller and connecting it electrically to the boiler/stats, and off I go, or does installation require a change to the plumbing also? Also, can anyone...

No problem mate, just sent on the email. Let me know if you don't receive it.

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

I just tried to do these calculations myself, and I'm not a physicist so I probably made a big mistake here somewhere.... Tank starts at 80C Working temp down to 40C -> 80-40 - 40C temperature differential of 'effectice heat' Specific heat capacity of water: 4.2 KJ/Kg.K 300L of water =...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi Agile, Can you elaborate on that further - you are saying that 80C in a 300L CH tank would only last 15 minutes? Take the solar out of the equation for now, and just assume the boiler is the only source - are you saying the UFH would draw off that much heat that fast that the boiler...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Bottom is currently connected to solar, but chances of the solar ever doing CH heating (when needed, i.e. in winter) are low, so would probably get away with connecting it to the middle coil... As for software, I spent a while searching for a good program, but in the end used microsoft...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Won't linking top and middle coil only heat the top of the tank then, making the buffer effectively 150L instead of 300L ? I'll try the fish-wire, I have some lying around. Any idea what a 'good' length coil would be, assuming it is an 1nch diameter?

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Thanks mate, really appreciate the sagely advice! I can add a pump for the UFH also, to help the flow to the manifolds. Would that pump need a bypass also, in case the manifold mixers were opening and closing a lot, maybe cutting off the flow. I'll also add the potable vessel to the DHW -...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Thanks for the reply - please see my responses inline: No problems here - checked them all with hand-held sensors, and confirmed temps. I think the problem is the surface area of the middle coil being too small. I believe flow was between 67 and 70 and return was between 62 and 65. So...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi All, Here are the images I put together of the current setup: and proposed setup: The area of concern is the CH tank which is used as a buffer for UFH, and heated towel rads. May be used for some rads in future, but not connecting them at the moment. The hope is that if the UFH...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi All, Many thanks for all the helpful comments here. The boiler is 35kw, condensing oil boiler. My guess why the cycling is occurring is that it was not connected to the primary coil by the the 'plumber' (I don't know if he even qualifies to be called one, there have been some other huge...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi Guys - you hit the nail on the head - I do have a plumber (who seemed to know what he was at - he talked the talk when I first employed him to fit out the house). The more research I did about the heating system, and started to learn the complexities of them, the more I discovered he...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi John, one final question - assuming I don't go for the mixer valve and stick with the current hookup (boiler connected via a coil) - the boiler seems to run for about 30 seconds, and then stop for a minute or two, and then starts again. It is due to the boiler cutting out due to the...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi John, Thanks for that - very imformative, and looks like it could be done with a mixing valve. The diagram is interesting - it seems to suggest the UFH takes the water off quite low on the tank - and the boiler inputs at the top of the tank. As for the mixer - what temperature should...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Sorry, I don't have a schematic to hand - but here is a quick outline I have 2 separate 300L tanks One for DHW One for CH The DHW uses solar and boiler, and as suggested, bottom coil is solar, top coil is boiler, and primary flow and return are for hot water. The second tank, the CH...

Connecting a boiler to a buffer with UFH

Hi All, I was wondering what the best way to connect an oil boiler to a 300L buffer tank would be. What I have: A 300L tank (with solar) for DHW - the boiler can connect to a coil on this (I think this part is ok) A second tank for CH - this supplies UFH and towel rads. Currently I...
