Boiler does not fire up on demand - Follow up

Cheers Ian, it's starting to make sense! I'll check out that link, thank you.

Fair point, and I will probably do that, thanks.

Boiler does not fire up on demand - Follow up

It's been really useful looking at the wiring diagram and I've read this through about 5 or 6 times now:- http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php/Three_port_mid_position_valve I think it may take 2 or 3 more read throughs but at least it is little by little sinking in. This is the valve I have:-...

Boiler does not fire up on demand - Follow up

The motorised valve (with the W-M-H on it) has appeared to work and move to all three positions without problem, although I don't know if you mean something more subtle than that. Maybe it's not a question of it mechanically failing, instead a case of it not going where it needs to go, when it...

Boiler does not fire up on demand - Follow up

Hello Group, I originally posted this a couple of months ago:- https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/curious-heating-behaviour-boiler-does-not-fire-up-on-demand.579594/ and I had some degree of success thanks to your kind help. I changed the jumpers on the controller to the correct setting and...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

Managed to get the boiler casing off and access the programmer, and took it off the wall. The jumper was indeed set to "G" instead of "P", and I therefore changed this. This has solved the "red light" issue, and both hot water and heating now click on and off independent depending on setting...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

That's interesting - it links back to a comment John D made earlier about a setting at the back of the programmer. I take it then that the dark red gizmo to the right of the boiler and below the motorised valve is a pump, and that even though I have a water tank in the loft and cylinder in an...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

The valve goes over to H and has stayed there even when I re-enable hot water and/or turn on the hot tap. It's right across under H and won't go any further. What is interesting though, that I didn't notice before, is that even when the hot water is set to "Off" on the programmer, the red...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

I turned down the thermostat and the valve moved over to W. I turned it back up, and the valve moved to M. I tried this several times with consistent results. That suggests to me (as a layman) that the valve is ok. The radiators have warmed up but it seems the boiler/radiators only came on...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

Thanks Chris. I think the "green" is historic and there isn't any current evidence of a leak. If it's a purely cosmetic thing I can live with it, but of course if it's interfering with operation then that's something to consider further. In terms of the valve "energising" for heating, are you...

Thanks Jack. I'll watch out for that and report back.

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

Going to try this now - I'll put it up to 60. I am reluctant to whack it up too much in case the water becomes too hot to touch. Yes. Going forwards I will probably have to get that repositioned. Thanks.

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

Hello Jack. My hot water requirements aren't high as I live alone, so I haven't noticed a lack of hot water per se. I know that sometimes I have to run the tap a little before the water heats up (maybe 15-20 seconds) and at the other end of the scale, the water can start to cool after a...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

Hi John, Thanks for your reply. I moved in in February and it was a little erratic then too. As the weather warmed up through the spring and summer it became less noticeable as an issue, because of course I didn't really need to heat the house as much. Now that the weather has turned colder...

Curious heating behaviour? (boiler does not fire up on demand)

OK, so I recognise that there have been posts on similar issues so apologies in advance if we're going over old ground. I simply cannot get my head around the way my heating is behaving. Quick description of the setup:- Boiler is downstairs, a "Glowworm Ultimate" - old. Installed 80s/90s I...
