    Thanks a lot guys. I have thought about a water pipe but there aren't any on that side of the house, however the youtube videos are very interesting, some of what was on there is exactly what we had. I thought it was concrete they had put on the walls but it could have been a tanking slurry...

    Hi, it's lower at the front by about two brick levels, at the back it's closer to equal. I've started digging that out a bit and clearing old bushes, etc. A damp guy did come round once but dismissed any issue with the outside, I wasn't as convinced as he was.
