Insulating a single skin brick wall

For anyone interested… I actually went a different route with this. I paid a guy to get up on the roof and treat the wall with Stormdry masonry cream on the exterior side. Hopefully should give it some water resistance - at least more than it has now. I’ve then gone ahead with lime mortar /...

Insulating a single skin brick wall

Quick question. The Thompson’s brick sealer says in big letters ‘Exterior use only’ Should I be looking at damp proof paint rather than brick sealer?

Haha if only I could achieve that! Think I’ll go with your suggestion of sealing the bricks and injecting DPC cream along the roof line. That’s probably the best I can do! And also quite belt and braces. Any favourites for foam adhesive?

Insulating a single skin brick wall

Haha. Sadly yes. Window doesn’t open so it was fine with BC. As I mentioned earlier - build was a horrendous experience that I just wanted to be over- putting an extension on that was the least of my priorities at the time

Insulating a single skin brick wall

I’m pretty sure that is the case yes. I’ve attached a photo of the opposite side which is identical - so yes I think there are a bunch of snapped bricks in there. That part of the wall isn’t visible from the outside. Glad you think internal waterproofing is a good idea. Any recommendations for...

Insulating a single skin brick wall

Just returning to this job now. Having inspected the wall, there are some salty deposits coming through and I *think* there are some slightly damp patches - water coming through the brick from outside. But very, very small amounts. Never any water on the stairs below. I’d really appreciate a...

Air source heat pump vs single room MVHR to combat condensation & mould

Whenever the lights are on in the bathroom, and overrun for around 20mins after that.

Insulating a single skin brick wall

This would probably work pretty well for me actually. Thanks for the suggestion. I reckon I have around 5-6cm in total to work with - do the battens have to be 25mm thick or could I go thinner? Thanks again.

Insulating a single skin brick wall

Didn't realise it was quite that expensive! But yes, breathable and potentially avoiding a moisture/mould problem. What about sealing the bricks, battening the wall, using rock wool or something similar between, then a vapour barrier then plaster board? Thanks. Definitely not wet, but as...

Air source heat pump vs single room MVHR to combat condensation & mould

Will definitely do the fan. In terms of chimneys, the entirety of one has been removed so there is no flue there anymore - just the residual chimney propped up in the wall in the loft. The front rooms still have a chimney - stove in the downstairs living room and above that on the first floor...

Insulating a single skin brick wall

What about using a breathable brick sealer to the inside of the bricks, then fixing aerogel backed plasterboard directly to the brick (or with small battens first)? Pretty sure I can get it airtight on the inside. Access to the outside wall to render it would be basically impossible

    But cold! Any particular suggestions?

Air source heat pump vs single room MVHR to combat condensation & mould

Fireplace is now a wood burning stove with a flexible flue up to the chimney. Extractors x 3 - one over the hob to the outdoors, one over the main shower directly through a vent tile in the roof and the last in loft en-suite through a mushroom vent on the roof. I’ll try to find photos. Middle...

Insulating a single skin brick wall

Best not to ask about regs. The build was a horrendous experience and to this day I regret doing it. Nonetheless, it did pass regs and I have the certificate for it. It is a single layer of bricks. Only half of that small bit of wall actually faces the elements - the other half is to the next...

Air source heat pump vs single room MVHR to combat condensation & mould

Awesome. Thanks. In which case I’m probably best off using single room ones for the most affected rooms in the house - both middle floor bedrooms. I reckon it would be almost impossible to retrofit the entire house
