    Paint is fine. It's the plaster behind and then, I'd hope, brickwork which makes up the chimney breast. The drill bit just sunk straight through and very powdery stuff came out of the enlarged hole. No hard resistance of red dusk of the brick I was expecting.

    Hi John, thanks for the really quick response. Whole room was re-plastered a few months ago. I didn't get the plasterer back again because he laid it so thick in places and occasionally uneven. I've drilled 60mm deep - hence I assumed I would have gone well through any new plaster and into brick...
