It was a double seal manhole cover, but the concrete around it has got on the seal quite a bit, so I think this isn't helping. Is applying the grease at the level of the floor /hatch normal and effective? And if so how to get around it getting on everything. I'm puzzled on how this solution is...

I had a firm out twice now to try stop a persistent smell from hatch to sewer which is inside my house. They fitted a new hatch the first time. 2nd time called out for same smell issue have removed some gravel from the seal and have put grease around the metal edge of the manhole where it meets...
