Converting storage heater switch to socket

Well that was quite a read. I'm not sure I'm any clearer though! I'll give it another read tomorrow with a fresh brain. In the meantime thanks to all for contributions/help. Much appreciated.

Converting storage heater switch to socket

Ooh, do tell me more please! I'd love it if I didn't have to change anything in the CU.

Converting storage heater switch to socket

Ok thanks very much for the explanation; that does indeed make RCD sockets entirely useless! I'm not sure if I really want to go replacing/relocating things in consumer units so I don't know if this idea has any legs after all. It was nice in theory  Ooh I like that, thanks!

Converting storage heater switch to socket

Also just so I understand - why is it that an RCD socket outlet isn't suitable for this proposed work? This switch / proposed socket is the only thing on its circuit so I thought the RCD would have been fine there. I see it is also possible to get RCD FCUs - would one of those be any better...

Converting storage heater switch to socket

Thanks, that makes sense. Our main consumer unit has MCBs and RCDs but the two consumer units for the storage heaters only have MCBs. Here's a photo of the storage heater CU: Do these look like we could replace the relevant one with an RCBO? Is that something an electrician would need to...

Converting storage heater switch to socket

Hi all, long time no see  We will shortly be removing a storage heater we no longer need. It is currently connected to the storage heater CU by means of a 20amp DP switch. At first we assumed this switch would just become redundant. But I've had an idea. Is there anything wrong with...

What is the middle switch doing?

I don't think the black has been used as the earth, as there are separate earth wires in there. I think I'm going to have to have another look inside and see if there is indeed another cut black (when there's enough daylight that is :)) It occurred to me yesterday, actually, that there was...

What is the middle switch doing?

Ohh, do you mean one of the two reds which go into the yellow twist on connector? Because there's only one black there? I don't quite understand this, do you mean the two holes should be joined by sawing a gap between them? What is the transformer effect and why would cutting a gap help?

What is the middle switch doing?

Aaaand second one installed this morning, also fully operational. Thanks again all for your help and advice.

What is the middle switch doing?

One PIR successfully installed this afternoon :) fully operational. One down, one to go (as soon as we get more dry weather).

What is the middle switch doing?

Thanks all  mind duly put at rest, and I shall be sure to teach myself continuity testing. And I've learned about MK grid switches too, so that's a bonus.

What is the middle switch doing?

Sorry to harp on, but anxiety is getting the better of me and for some reason I'm worrying about having this switch on all the time once the PIRs are connected. Can you put my mind at rest that this switch will be ok for the PIR lights outside? It's worked fine whenever we've switched on the...

What is the middle switch doing?

We have a multimeter :) I just can't get my head around sticking one probe at one switch and stretching to touch the other probe at another switch across the room... that can't be right, can it? Thanks for the info... surprising the switch could be that new! (I was hoping it was something...

What is the middle switch doing?

Thanks all... underground bunker haha could be  So it is all safe enough, as it stands, to wire the PIR lights in? That's my priority of course, to make sure we can safely put the new lights up. Then when we have more time (so many jobs on the go, so little time) I'd love to start...

What is the middle switch doing?

Hi all, I have a new question for you :) We're looking to replace our old outside front lights with PIR ones. Tonight I wanted to check the wiring behind the light switch to see what we're dealing with. And I'm a tad confused hence this post. The light switch in question is a 3-gang. The...
