    i wouldnt be able to bear the site of the cable when i sit out in the summer... new cable just trails round the perimiter of my fence...when the weather picks up it will be buried.. thanks again for all your help

    cheers for all the help guys...this will be a temp measure just for a couple of days...i will then replace the cable with 6mm swa via an alternate route as i don't want to take up the block paving so the old cable will be left in situ

    jcb was used when the digging out was done...the only thing i can think is that they nicked the cable and over time water has gotten in ....anyway would it be safe to replace the cable with 2.5 or would you reccommend 4mm

    ok guys heres what i did....switched the mcb off in the house to the garage....went into the garage and disconected the swa from the cu in the garage, kept the wires seperated with block connector ....went back to the house to switch on the mcb and the rcd still tripped out

    its not the shower as that doesnt trip the rcd....if i switch the mcb on to the garage the rcd will trip

    ahh yes well the rcd is also used for the shower.... hence the mcb being switched off yes the swa runs straight into each cu...cant take photos of the cables without causing damage to either the house or garage

    cheers for the replys guys, i have done as instructed turned the main cu off in the garage but the rcd still trips in the house....i know you say its not the swa cable but i have had the whole area where the cable is block paved in november....personally i was putting it down to the cable only...

    davelx i will answer the question in order of being asked to stop any confusion the rcd thats tripping is in the house (see pic below) yes there is a cu in the garage main switch 63a, sockets 20a, lights 6a plus a 6a not used cable run is approx 10m only earth that i can see...
