Out of interest how come? Why are they not needed?

When you say `Join all four black wires together in one connector block - discard the black link wire.` do you mean don't connect them to the switch and put them into a connector block outside of the switch?

@EFLImpudence this is what I bought. There is a room with 2 light circuits.

Can somebody point me in the right direction of how this old switch wiring works on a new double switch, please? I had a go but now one light only turns on if the other has been switched on so I've gone wrong somewhere lol. The switch I've bought is here...
