Has anyone ever seen a black like gravel in the bottom of an outside drain?

Yup, but nothing out of the ordinary of a normal drain smell.

Has anyone ever seen a black like gravel in the bottom of an outside drain?

This is the outside u bend for my bathroom. Serves the sink and shower/bath plug only. It flows into the same manhole as the sewage. I was clearing out the scum on the bath drain filter today and noticed a loose gravel at the bottom of the drain. I scraped out the top layer and found there was...

Cavity wall insulation - should it go below the damp proof course?

Per this guide: https://www.rockwool.com/siteassets/rw-uk/downloads/installation-guides/cavity-batt-installation-guide.pdf?f=20210301133533 "The installation of the batts should commence below the damp proof course (preferably by at least 150mm) with no risk of capillary action to minimise...

Cavity wall insulation - should it go below the damp proof course?

I've been reading up on insulation for a cavity wall and seen some odd information. On the Rockwall website, they advise their insulated Rockwall Batts should be installed below the damp proof course? Is this correct, as surely if any insulation reaches below the damp course won't it wick up any...

Bathroom ceiling light melted wiring - likely cause?

Normal E22 bulb fitting. Did have an old 60watt bulb that I am going to swap for LED, but it's been used daily for the last two years

Bathroom ceiling light melted wiring - likely cause?

Bathroom bulb blew today, first time I've taken down the ceiling fitting since moving in. Found one of the live wires has partially melted through, no idea how long ago. Wiring looks a bit of a mess anyway, but any ideas why it would have melted. Slightly concerned it could have melted through...

Maybe a daft question - can I lean a ladder against a tiled dormer?

Thanks all, going to give it a go this weekend. Last question from me, wondering if the easiest way up is to climb up the side of the house, ease along the ridge tiles then slide onto the dormer roof. The ridge tiles are cemented on, am I okay to put my weight on those or is that an even worse...

Maybe a daft question - can I lean a ladder against a tiled dormer?

Would standing on the roof tiles beneath be safe? Wouldn't they risk slipping under weight, or worse, cracking? I do wonder how the gutter was fitted, it looks like the old one hung too far out from the edge - but not sure I can get shorter brackets to make it sit closer to the roof edge or not.

Ah I see. Thanks for the info, not easy to rectify!

Maybe a daft question - can I lean a ladder against a tiled dormer?

Thanks all. Yeah it's awkward to get to, might have to place the brackets then stand on the flat roof and hang the gutter from above. Noseall, what do you mean by lack of a drip edge? I bought the home with the dormer, never really clocked a problem other than the gutter being too far out from...

Maybe a daft question - can I lean a ladder against a tiled dormer?

So the wind has pulled the gutter off the top of my dormer. It's clad in overlapping tiles, can I safely lean the ladder against the tiles to get up there, or will the downward angle of the ladder on the tiles cause it to pull the hanging tiles off the dormer wall? I'd prefer to avoid causing...

Stiff lock shield valves - can I loosen them with WD 40?

Thanks all. I only made minor adjustments as it's slightly off, I'm not doing a full rebalance. Just adjusting one of the slower to heat radiators

Stiff lock shield valves - can I loosen them with WD 40?

Noted, but that wasn't the original question. They're useful to have when balancing the system so I'm not running around with a spanner or removing the covering cap each time

Stiff lock shield valves - can I loosen them with WD 40?

Makes sense. They do have plastic caps that allow you to turn the valve by hand, which is where I meant some are easily to adjust and others require a spanner/pliers
