Well - I finally capitulated over the week-end - I couldn't get that nut off to replace the washer so I called in a plumber who also couldn't get the nut off despite all his expert tools! So I ordered the whole inlet thing off the Ideal Standard web-site so hopefully I can fit that OK.

Thanks again Charnwood for your help - however I can't for the life of me undo the big nut - I have taken off the float valve arm to give me more access but the inlet pipe is in the way of a spanner - I own up to being useless but I'm always up for a try - is there a special tool I can buy from...

I have the same problem as that recorded here and I think the solution is the washer but how do I remove the inlet pipe to get at the washer? It is about nine inches long and has the blue ball valve mechanism at the top of it but it's locked tight on to the base of cystern and I can't move it...
