Creosote subs is intended for outdoor work.

Cuprinol Green would have been better for your job :(

Is the subfloor well-ventilated by airbricks or something? (so the smell can get out even if it doesn't escape into the room)?

I am guessing you did it because you found damp under the floor, is that right?

Yes it was wet with a musty smell in the room, I believe it was from an outside chimney pot that did not have a cap on and rain was getting in and wetting the cavity floor. The fireplace is bricked up within the room. When I lifted the floor to see what was causing the musty smell I creosoted the end of the six joists that appeared damp, however it stinks although I have not relaid the new floor until this smell has gone.

leaving it open will help it dry faster.

You can wrap the joist ends in plastic before relaying the floor, this will mean the residual smell will be muffled and fainter (but they will eventually dry out).

Is it a ground floor, with airbricks that will be ventilated to outside? Or is it an upstairs floor where the smell cannot escape without coming into the room?

The fireplace ought to have an airbrick so that there will be a flow of air through the chimney to keep it dry.

This floor always smells musty, therefore I had a look under and found a lot of wetness from an outside chimney, the fireplace is blocked off. The chimney did not have a cap on and with all the rain---------- whilst seeing to this problem I creosoted the ends of some joists, the stink is horrid. Thanks for all your comments.

Creosote like TCP you gargle with for a sore throat has a Nuclear Half life of 50,000 years.

Good Luck.
