Central heating switches off after 30 minutes - why?

Sounds like you have a dirty system and the boilers main heat exchanger has become partially blocked/restricted.

Are there any noises before the boiler goes off?
No, nothing out of the ordinary. I had a plumber come round to install a new towel rail in the spring and not had my heating on since then - could he have turned a valve off or something?

Right then, an update on this. I had a plumber come round and fit a new heating pump, but unfortunately the problem remains :( The heating comes on for 20 minutes, and then the boiler stops firing and won't fire up again for around 4 hours. So I'm guessing the fault lies with the boiler. Need to get a heating engineer out now.

Yes I think so
either you have or haven't;) ( to IANS question above)

'Typically, boilers overheating due to fan problems will operate for 30-45 minutes before locking out'. Maybe that's the problem I have!
why do you think that ?

guessing isn't going to sort your problem out , maybe to start with take a video of your boiler when your boiler has locked out would be the way forward i suspect , if your not prepared to give accurate info then the best course of action would be to get a gas engineer;)
