If you're not re-tiling and just replacing a bar shower with this, then you have to rely on the copper pipes... Are they in a solid wall or a stud wall? If using the shower pl8 then you'll need to remove tiles fix the plate and tile back over the top.

The honeywell would have used the batteries to switch a relay within the unit and connect the 2 wires together (either low voltage or high voltage) when the stat calls for heat. This "contacting" or "joining" of the 2 wires completes the circuit back to the boiler switched live and fires it...
