Concrete pad advice for a small summerhouse

Hi We’ve ordered a summerhouse, about 2.2x2.2m square. It will need a concrete pad to sit on and wre considering doing this ourselves. I’m seeing conflicting advice online and from tradesmen too. I read that it needs 100mm sub base (mot type 1, compacted) and then 100mm concrete pad, with...

    Gravel boards and misaligned posts

Hi all I’d like to add concrete gravel boards between my existing concrete posts which currently have wooden fence panels between them. Now whoever put them up must have been drunk as one is slightly tilted, and another is slightly ‘twisted’ relative to its partner. This means that, a...

Reducing low frequency sounds through double glazed windows

Sure. I was hoping someone had similar experiences that could chime in. I’m reading about ‘coincident dip’ which seems to correlate with my experience..

Reducing low frequency sounds through double glazed windows

Hi everyone Looking for some advice about reducing noise through windows, specifically low-pitched noise. Three bed end terrace house, had the double glazing and all frames replaced about seven years ago with UPVC double glazing. I’m close - but not next to - a busy 30mph road. One side of the...

Reassure me - foundations of old lean to extension

Fair. Bloody thing. I darent spend too much on it or around for fear it will sink but it’s been fine for so long it’s sort of proving its worth despite the general crap factor.

Reassure me - foundations of old lean to extension

My main reason for asking is that I want to relay patio next to it. Which would involve digging down 10-20cm or so beside it for the sub base or drainage channels to be laid. I’m paranoid that disturbing it more would cause issues. But then I imagine the garden has been through many changes in...

Reassure me - foundations of old lean to extension

Reviving my thread as I’m curious again. Photos attached this time of where I have done small test digs.. One corner. The left wall is the garage. The wall on centre of frame is the bottom of the extension. At first I was reassured I was seeing bricks deeper into the groin but then the appear to...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

I don’t think so, not that I’ve noticed.. Issue is that one or two rads will have really poor performance - lukewarm to touch - bottoms of some rads lukewarm - can hold hand on them. Plus lots of gurgles, clicks, whooshing noises which do my head in and stop me using certain rads as they wake...

About 1.5 bar I think, it goes up to higher green zone when running

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

So I’ve seen the entire pipework run and it’s all pretty by the numbers. No offshoots, no redundant parts.. in fact a few in the ago the ‘backbone’ was entirely upgraded to 22mm from 15mm. Previous person to mess with it had installed two shut off valves in line to BR. These were also removed...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

Not sure! One of the bleed valve in the pipework for draining doesn’t give any flow when loosened so perhaps that is dodgy but I’d expect a leak if that was the cause. In the pipework up to bathroom there is a 90 degree bend to get it away from the joist as it goes into ceiling.. perhaps this...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

Not a clue, this is what I’m going nuts! My personal suspicion - and last straw - is that the two drops of pipes form upstairs to downstairs are still original and have not been replaced. They’re approx 15 years old and not a professional install. So I’m thinking perhaps there is corrosion...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

No drips whatsoever - no corrosion signs or water on wall. I never see pressure rise (aside from ever so slight when it’s running)

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

I’ve done this. Last five days. I don’t get any air from the rads in the traditional sense (ie water comes out of bleed valve straight away). But the heating performance is poor. Trickling noises, especially if I turn all thermostats off aside from LR and EXT - then it sounds like a waterfall.

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

The red I get the most fizzy water from varies. It has changed over the years. For a long while it was only BR. But more recently I’m having way more luck with B3. Thr fizzy air will shoot out like a rocket, you’ll hear whooshing and spitting. Sometimes it’s rhythmic, like whoosh trickle whoosh...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

Hi Just about to start work so I’ll reply to all your points later. But I do have to bleed with the pump on. If I bleed with it off, I just get water out. Nice gentle trickle. If I bleed with it on, I get the fizzing and farting water. I would think perhaps this is water I’m introducing by the...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

That’s a bit difficult to quantify, the speed at which it gets worse. During winter it’s usually only off during the day, overnight. It’s left unused over summer. I’ve ordered some Bluetooth heat sensors so I can measure how fast it heats rooms and get some data on the speeds for comparison...

Central Heating Nightmare - Air in System Daily

For the first three of four years being here I didn’t really touch the system apart from running it so I know what the symptoms elevate to. The rads all jsut get lukewarm, they don’t really output any heat to be worth a damn. I’ll have the heating running all evening and need a jumper. Rooms...
