Whistling windows - can't find source

Just returning to this thread to share the good news that I finally stumbled upon a fix to the problem. I put some duct tape over a joint between two bits of the brown fascia on the outside, and since then there's been no whistling despite plenty wind. Will need a more permanent fix but at...

Dezincification of CH fittings - time to replace?

That's great, thanks. Final questions - to clarify, the types of fittings shown on the photos are brass, not copper? If they're brass, how do they end up looking green too? Regarding the "crack" in the earlier photo, I had a look again and fortunately it was a bit of fluff that just happened...

Dezincification of CH fittings - time to replace?

Thanks again. Any advice for what dezincification might look like? I'm just wanting to have an idea what to look for so if someone's coming to check the CH and they're pointing things out that I know what I'm looking for. Also, I would guess there's no reason that dezincification and...

Dezincification of CH fittings - time to replace?

Thanks for the reply. Here's a close up of what I thought might be a crack - I was going to go and take a better look at it, didn't notice when I was taking the photo. Is there a way to tell oxidisation and dezincification apart? Anything I can look for?

Dezincification of CH fittings - time to replace?

Hi, I've found that the CH was needing topped up fairly regularly, every couple of weeks. Long story short, when getting my go-to guy for CH to check a couple of leaks I found, he flagged up that in general the CH fittings were showing signs of bad dezincification and that given their age...

Whistling windows - can't find source

Can't be, her snoring is a much louder, baritone sound, not the high pitched squeaking I can hear.

Whistling windows - can't find source

That's a good tip, I've just been sealing over the suspect bits. I'll need to get some more sealant and I'll try doing it properly. Cheers

No trickle vents, but thanks for the suggestion.

Whistling windows - can't find source

I did already try using duct tape to seal around the windows. The noise persisted, and I've also heard the noise from outside, so I'm not sure this will help. I will try it again, though, in case I didn't seal things very well last time. Just thinking as I was typing the above - when I've heard...

Whistling windows - can't find source

The sound is a high pitched squeak, rather than a lower drone like I would expect if it was that pipe, but it's worth a shot, thanks! I'll try partially capping the bottom of the pipe to see if that does anything.

Time for a new roof, or keep patching things up?

Of course, I should have included them to start with! Sure, here’s a photo from a drone survey done by some roofers. I’ve add a couple of yellow arrows to highlight two tiles that are loose on the dormer windows. Here’s a better look at the loose tile shown by the left arrow Here’s a...

Whistling windows - can't find source

Hi, A nail that was holding the fascia on had popped out, I sealed the hole it left and put some duct tape over it.

Whistling windows - can't find source

Hello again, An update - trying the handle trick didn't help locate the problem. Can't say I hear the noise when I do it, at least not over the sound of the handle moving. The noise is present when the windows are open, so I'm quite sure it's not (entirely) air coming in around the window...

Time for a new roof, or keep patching things up?

Hi, We are weighing up whether it is time to bite the bullet and replace our roof. Obviously it’s subjective, but I'm looking for any advice to help decide if we're at that tipping point where replacing the whole roof makes sense, or if patching things up is a better idea. Here’s some...

Whistling windows - can't find source

That's very helpful, thank you. I'll cover it up with something I can easily remove to see if it stops the whistling, to at least see if it helps diagnose the problem.

Whistling windows - can't find source

I've noticed that there appears to be a small exterior gap running the entire length of the bottom of the window, as you can hopefully make out in the photo. It's honestly about the only possible issue I can see. There's an identical window in our kid's bedroom that has this too, and it isn't...

Whistling windows - can't find source

Oops! I misunderstood, will try turning the handle tomorrow when I get the chance, see if that helps shed any light on things. Thanks!

Whistling windows - can't find source

Yes. With the window wide open and my ear near where the red arrow is in my first image above, I can hear air whistling either from behind the brown fascia and/or window frame.

Whistling windows - can't find source

Tried that, didn't work out unfortunately. I even went as far as sealing the windows shut from the inside with duct tape, thinking that if it fixed the problem I'd at least have found out where the problem was, but the whistling persisted. Might try again though! Running a bead of sealant over...

Whistling windows - can't find source

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I tried your trick of opening and closing the windows - can't say I heard the whistling sound when I did that, though it's possible it was masked by the sound of the hinges squeaking. I did, however, spot some iffy looking silicone around the exterior trim. It was a...
