    Just wrap the short bits of unsleeved pipe in tape to protect from lime in the cement and fill. Denso tape is what is normally used but any protective tape will do.

    If the gate valve is above the cylinder then the cylinder will not empty when you replace it.Just turn off mains,drain down the tank and do it.

    Yes you do otherwise you will have to silver solder and that requires Borax as a flux which as madrab says is not suitable for potable water.

    Use a pipe sealant if you get no joy with ptfe or remove olives,clean again and fit new olives with a smear of sealant on the olives.Copper olives tighten easier than brass

    How much difference are we talking ? I would cut the copper and put new pieces in but if you are not confident then it might be easier to drop the rad 1/2" or whatever. Most rad valves will be the same length.

    They may fit but if not you can remove the olive and nut and use the new ones.

    Empty the tank using a hosepipe = syphon after first closing mains supply to the tank.

    Turn off supply to tank and use a hosepipe to empty it by syphoning it either outside or into wc/bath. It works well and empties quite quickly. If you force the gate valve it could snap.

    It will be a CC cistern but for £40 you should be able to get a ceramic cistern. Are you sure it's a hairline crack ?.Does it leak ?

    Your boiler may have a bypass or you can put an automatic bypass in between the flow and return or you can remove one TRV (bathroom). If it's a combi then no bleed would normally be needed in loft.

    Just to revive this thread i had the same problem with my 2 yr old Henry so removed the small pc board and wires as shown in this photo.I then wired up the two white wires to the opposite side of the on/off switch and all is now working except the turbo switch which we never used anyway..easy.
