    Granite Overlay for Kitchen

We've been talking about replacing the kitchen worktop for a while now, currently it's just wood effect laminate (38mm) that I think we got from B&Q. We like the look of granite but it's a little on the expensive side. We've come across some places that offer a granite overlay and I had some...

Would you believe I went to, and the battery in my multimeter is dead!! So I need to get a new one.

    Earth Leakage Detector

If I'm honest, I really don't know. We may have got the treadmill after the extension was built, but we could have gotten it before. I can't remember sadly. As far as I can remember, it's never worked in the garage. My wife says it has, but I don't think it has, we've always had to run an...

I'll pass that on to my wife :) Thanks everyone for their help.

    Earth Leakage Detector

A question. When the extension was built I remember the electrician performing some tests on the new circuit, it was three year ago, but would those tests have confirmed that the extension circuit was error free, and if that's the case I could rule out there being a problem with the extension...

The garage only has one socket. Do you think it would be worthwhile running a fused spur from one of the sockets in the extension and running a new cable into the garage. Would that be a little more ideal?

    Earth Leakage Detector

I'm going to take a stab and say the garage is a radial while the extension is a ring? I can open up the consumer unit, and connected to the RCD I can see three sets of cables. The first set is red/black - the garage The second and third set of cables are both blue/brown and these are for the...

No the garage is connected directly to the RCD, and so is the extension. They're both ran directly from the RCD.

    Earth Leakage Detector

    Yep, disconnected them both completely.

    Earth Leakage Detector

No, but I don't think there's any need, as I've tested the treadmill connected to the extension circuit, with the garage circuit completely disconnected from the RCD. The RCD feeds both the extension and the garage, I've completely disconnected the garage to rule out an issue with it's circuit...

    Earth Leakage Detector

I have tried the treadmill with nothing else connected to the garage circuit, and it still trips, so I'm not sure there are any devices which could also be causing a leak.

    Earth Leakage Detector

I've ran an extension cable from upstairs, into the garage and plugged the treadmill in, no tripping. Upstairs is supplied by a TYPE 3 RCD. The treadmill also doesn't trip when connected to the downstairs sockets, this is connected to a TYPE C RCD The only thing left I can try is to disconnect...

    Earth Leakage Detector

It trips with or without the extension lead. I may be tempted to call an electrician out to test the treadmill, at least if only to confirm the issue is with it.

    Earth Leakage Detector

That makes sense now. No in theory, if I connect the treadmill to an upstairs socket which is also on a type 3 RCD, then it should also trip. I may give that a try.

    Earth Leakage Detector

But the feed to the garage has had it's RCD replaced recently? or would the tolerance of the old RCD and the replacement be the similar? The old RCD (which I still have here) is a MEM M6 TYPE 3 16A 30mA

    Earth Leakage Detector

I've opened up the consumer unit, disconnected the garage feed, and connected the treadmill to the exchange via the same RCD, still tripped. It's all pointing to a problem with the treadmill, but... I don't understand why it trips when connected in the garage with absolutely nothing else...

    Earth Leakage Detector

That's what you would think, but the treadmill works when plugged into sockets in the house, so you'd think if there was an issue it would trip the RCD in the house too?

    Earth Leakage Detector

Actually, I have a 2kw heater connected in the extension (via the same RCD), and it works fine without tripping the RCD. But if I plug the treadmill into the same socket, it trips after a few minutes. The heater though, I can have on for hours. I've had heaters connected in the garage as well...

    Earth Leakage Detector

I'm going to add more information which I missed out as I'm certain the issue is caused somewhere on the garage feed. Our extension is also connected to the garage RCD, however I'm confident that the problem isn't with any of the extension wiring. Sorry, I should have mentioned this earlier...

yes it's a residential property. The RCD was ordered off ebay as apparently they're old and hard to get hold of now, at least that's what he said.
