    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Hello. Long post with a bit of a story sorry... I've made a few threads here before asking about advice on building a driveway on my front garden and I got some great advice, for which I'm grateful. Long story short, we accepted a quote for a guy to do our resin bound drive but he couldn't...

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Thanks for the link mate. I'll give it a thorough examination now. Does your modular walling bricks have no mortar holding them together?

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Thanks. I think I applied to one last September - https://www.linesearchbeforeudig.co.uk/ Both the electrics and water companies are still on "await response".

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Thank you sir. I might bloody have to at this rate, because as I said the guy doing the driveway just isn't advising on any of this or coming around. But I would seriously have a go myself but I'm unsure where the utility lines are, don't know how to use a cat and genny, etc.

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Sorry that picture is so inaccurate and the soil lawn level way too high. I've drawn a far more accurate one now (still still terrible at drawing) I've now added a concrete footing with the bottom oak sleeper with a stainless steel coach bolt in it (rebar corrodes against soil I believe)...

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

I've been thinking of making a post about him to ask if I'm being overly expectant or critical. First of all when he came and surveyed the front lawn, etc. he said yeah oak sleeper retaining walls would be fine to hold up the resin driveway and to use as replacement front walls for the...

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Thank you for noticing that too! I've had to ask on the Screwfix forum as well. I don't mean to sound ungrateful but I am getting to the point where I do not see the point in these forums, because even the people who do bother to reply only answer half of your questions, so they don't answer...

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

No problem :) Do you have any advice to offer on building the sleepers?

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

I’m confused. Are you telling me to look up the same product I posted a link to above your post? And I am more focussed on the gravel and geotextile membrane for this thread as I’m just looking for confirmation it will work and what the best measurements are :)

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Well the first would be buried deeper than in the pic but the ones on top would be these: https://www.screwfix.com/p/timbascrew-flange-timber-screws-silver-6-7-x-150mm-200-pack/7139j

Building oak sleeper retaining wall - is this a correct way?

Forgive my lack of illustrative skills, but as the picture attempts to show: Oak sleepers laid on a bed of 20mm gravel with the gravel back-filled in behind them so water can drain, with the gravel shielded from soil clogging it with non-woven geotextile membrane. Obviously the measurements...

Fixings for oak sleeper garden wall?

Thanks guys. I’ll consider both of them!

Fixings for oak sleeper garden wall?

Putting in retaining oak sleeper walls. They’ll be 200mm x 100mm sleepers laid on the 200mm face, so we need fixings that will go through the 100mm to the sleeper below. Screwfix only has 100mm (so too short) or 150mm screws which will go halfway through the sleeper below. Is this okay? And...

Planning permission needed for driveway and lowering front lawn?

There is also this lovely humdinger of a legal loophole that means anyone can park on your drive if they wish anyway. https://www.thesun.co.uk/motors/5902531/legal-loophole-means-anyone-can-park-on-your-drive/

Planning permission needed for driveway and lowering front lawn?

They could do, but as I said there are about a dozen houses on the estate who’ve been doing the same for years and driving right over the pavement. And the lampposts, telephone poles, etc. have been in the same place for decades up here.

Planning permission needed for driveway and lowering front lawn?

Thank you for the great post mate. Drive looks fantastic. I am curious as to why you went 0.5 metre down then 0.2m back up. Could you not have simply gone down 0.2m to start with then raised it back to the original level with your drive? Or did you want it dropping down anyway? So really...

Planning permission needed for driveway and lowering front lawn?

Thanks for the reply. We have a driveway installer coming tomorrow to survey the area and give a quote. Will he recommend certain things like BCO and/or SE based on his experience?

Thanks Mikeey. How much would consulting an SE be? £1,000+?

Ah so they are doing dropped kerbs during this lockdown. And oh god, a structural engineer. Something more costly!
