    Effect of EU legislation

I like having the fine variation, especially on the low side, where even a single 40W bulb would be too much when I'm watching a movie. No doubt when I've had more experience, I'll be able to calculate what sort of system I need to create the lux level on the floor that is safe without being...

    Effect of EU legislation

Well, at least you can now buy dimmable CFLs (£8), and you can buy square socketed CFLs (£2.40) that will take a dimmable ballast (~£40). Personally, I'm waiting for the dimmable ballasts to be a lot more cheap (~£10?) before replacing my living room lighting. Hopefully this will coincide...

What is taught at school now?

TBF, they only have so much time in the day, and there's so much junk that they keep adding to the curriculum, so something has to give. And not all the blame can be given to the govt or the teachers, it's also the quality of the parents and the qualities of the students. It's always a...

    Cables Through Wall

Well, they're a conductor and usually carry minute amounts of current caused by EMF passing through them. I consider them in the same category as network cables. Need to have sufficient insulation or a barrier because noone checks to see if your network/aerial cable is live before touching it.

    Cost of C&G 2382-10

I found the NICEIC Learning Guide to be very useful.

    Cables Through Wall

Or if you have a bit more money, put in a power and aerial socket. Also, I think if you are putting LV (power cable) and ELV (aerial) cables through the same hole, you need to ensure the ELV cable is insulated to the same amount as the LV. Probably be fine if it's coax, but not ribbon.

    2382 exam

I did the exam only through the IET. They seem to be the only ones who actually advertise that they'll let people do the exam only, though some other places may let you if you ask.

    Retraining as an Electrician

I've just finished C&G2330 L2 (full time), and the guys aren't kidding when they say there's bugger all work out there right now. A couple of kids in my class have managed to find apprenticeships, but otherwise, nada. Currently I'm applying for jobs in my old career - not giving up on...

    BS7671 17th edition Amendment #1 DPC

Wow, trying to explain why the odd multiples of the 3rd harmonic of the fundamental frequency is important is going to be a doozy. The kids in my class this year had a hard enough time with R-L-C circuits and pythagoras.

Is this right that cat5e cannot be next to power cables

Thought about Reg 528.1? I thought it was bad to put ELV wires through the same holes as LV unless you've got additional insulation/separators. The thinking goes, that when you are working with LV, you always test to see that it's dead, but noone bothers checking if data cables have somehow...

    SWA cutters

It might be of use where you don't have easy access to the far side of the cable, say, too heavy to turn over easily, or you're up a ladder.

    Becoming a sparky...

Legally, there isn't an age limit on apprenticeships any longer. In reality, I don't know anyone over 20 who has managed to get one. I'm in training myself - just completed my first year of C&G2330 L2. I'm getting my results back for my final practical exam on Thursday and then it's off job...

    Electrician, Career Chang Advice

I'm currently doing the 2330 Level 2. Tutor was going on about the older courses and apparently our course has already been made easier due to the restrictions of H&S - the only power tool we're allowed to touch is the cordless drill. So we don't do any cutting/lifting of floorboards, chasing...

    17th Question.

If there's only 1 question in the section you were unsure of and there was 1 questions wrong, then you can work it out. And also, as you are leaving the exam centre, you go 'doh' when you realise that you made the wrong choice on a question.

    17th Question.

I knew that. I can't remember the exact question, but it was about Periodic Inspection. And as many times as I read Chapter 62 (1 page!), I just could not see the answer there. The other question I got wrong I do remember - it was about using a power drill in an access tunnel, and what type...

    17th Question.

I did it a few months ago - just the exam, not the course - just worked through the NICEIC coursebook (saving myself £100s). Got 96% with 2 questions wrong. 1 of which I just didn't read the question correctly. But another one was very hard and I just couldn't find it in the book even after...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Since this is a DIY forum, and you have specifically said you aren't going to rewire, the next best thing is to use plastic backboxes. I have the same problem with old lighting wiring in my house. Some of if I've had to rewire, but some of it is damn awkward to replace having now been...

Power Off Before Corded Drilling? Impossible!

Depends on what you are drilling for and where. eg, if you are just putting up a picture hook, then I'd check for cables behind it and also locations vertically and horizontally for switches and sockets. If ok, then I'd be happy using a corded drill. otoh, if you are actually working on any...

    Splicing cables

I lived in NZ about 10 years ago. At least then the rules were quite a lot more lax than they are here. eg, ordinary light switch in bathrooms rather than a pull-switch. If I was hiring an overseas qualified electrician, I'd expect them to at least have achieved CG2382 - not too onerous to...
