    Light switch swap, L1, L2 and 1-way 2-way

Your wording/question is a little confusing. From this, we do not know exactly what does not work. Then you wrote You wrote "The bottom one worked" - (NOT "is working") - "but the top one wouldn't work for the stair lights (the 2-way)" this appears to indicate that the "top one" did not work...

2 Lamps to 1 Mains Plug

Nowhere does https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/vickleby-floor-lamp-white-handmade-30484483/ or https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/assembly_instructions/vickleby-floor-lamp-white-handmade__AA-2236132-2-2.pdf indicate a "sealed in-line switch" but one hopes that it comes with a BS 1363 Plug attached!

2 Lamps to 1 Mains Plug

Presumably, they come with plugs to insert into sockets. Why not just use a "Power Strip"' such as one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=power+strip&crid=D0AEI17GUV8&sprefix=power+strip%2Caps%2C352&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 some of which come with switches? Then, if you need a switch in each...

    High earth reading

What? What would work better than having only ONE SUPPLIER of Water, Sewerage, Electrical Energy, Gas, Communications, Roads etc. To supply such "services" by multiple means/suppliers would mean duplicating "infrastructure", which is a waste of resources. (Can you imagine two sets of water and...

    Landing light switch

From the two Red wires circled - coming from a cable which also contains an Earth conductor - is it that, in the UK, Twin and Earth cables - with two Red insulated conductors and a Ground conductor - are/were available for "Switch Loops" used for Lighting - to avoid re-designating Black (or...

    High earth reading

Presumably, the 235 is 235 Ohms - NOT 235 Volts ! PME - Protective Multiple Earthing. (https://connections.nationalgrid.co.uk/make-a-change/replace-equipment/earthing-pme-service/ ) Why is it "their earth wires" (TN-S system?) and what is a "Tenby" system ? Yes - TN-S It looks like two...

Ceiling electrical boxes for fixtures from North America to France

Ceiling light fixtures need to be supported adequately (depending upon their weight) no matter in which country they are installed. While appropriately rated Ceiling Boxes are required in North America, this is not necessarily true in other countries - where the "support" and the electrical...

    Simmerstat Life

One wonders to whom you are referring ! Well, NO! I see "what may be a spring contact "finger" on the inside of the cover in your second photo" - as I wrote in Post #4 - and not a "bayonet end". A "bayonet end" would be pointed. (A Bayonet Connector is defined - in Wikipedia - as "A bayonet...

    Simmerstat Life

While there may be a PCB in that blurry photo, any details cannot be discerned. I can discern no "bayonet strip end" in that picture - only several male "Spade" connectors - at the edges of the body of the device. You appear to have indicated what may be a spring contact "finger" on the inside...

Only using 1 cable in twin and earth

For "live cable" you may mean "Switched-Line Wire"! What is meant by "the neutral from the light to plug"?

    Simmerstat Life

Blurry photos - and convoluted question. Those Contacts may be too weak for purpose (!) Presumably, the 5W refers to the power used by the "Bi-Metal Strip", NOT the "Heating Element" which it is switching.

Tumble dryer and washing machine warning after blaze, and off-peak electric?

I do not use a Tumble Dryer but I just use a Washing Machine. I regularly set the Washing Machine to wash in the early hours of the morning and then "hang-out" the washing (in the bright Australian sunlight,) after I get-up! No problems, after about 40 years!

In that case, who changed the plug - where and when?

Rewire 2 pin shaver plug (possibly New Zealand?) (Ed.)

If this is a 2-pin UK "Shaver Plug", the device to which it is connected is double-insulated and does not have an Earth connection. It is a Power-Supply in which the output is isolated from the Mains. The "output" if this Power-Supply is fed to an induction coil in the Base for the toothbrush...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

Thank you for your considered response. You wrote "many other countries seem to have done a bit better at addressing the issue!" I wonder, could you specify such "Countries" ? I am not sure that my country of Australia would qualify!

Older wires to change light switches

Which is a "problem", where the UK (and North America) has not eliminated this "necessity" with their designs of such devices. Unlike, in certain other Countries, which, by the better design of "double insulating", such "necessities" have been eliminated.

    Knightsbridge downlighter replacement

Har, bl**dy har! (Australia is now defined as the world's Smallest CONTINENT and not (both at the same time) the world's Largest ISLAND. The worlds largest ISLAND is now defined as Greenland.
