Cistern lever arm/flush arm - why are these made of plastic?

But often things designed down to a price can have more expensive equivalents that are designed to be long lasting. Maybe I'll hunt out a bit of aluminium and make one of my own lever arms ....... how hard can it be?

Cistern lever arm/flush arm - why are these made of plastic?

This is an example of what I'm referring to: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Toilet-Cistern-Flush-Lever-Arm/dp/B0874PTLQ2 Plastic breaks. Why not make this out of aluminium or even brass? I've broken a few over the years and I'm sure they're getting more flimsy and breakable.

Cupboard door - can't figure out what type of hinges to use

Funnily enough the door has been sitting in the same building for years and it's only warped ever so slightly. It's good enough for this particular job.

Cupboard door - can't figure out what type of hinges to use

Thanks for the suggestions, I prefer the second type. However, I forgot to mention that this will be inside an outbuilding that's a bit open on two sides and the air can get rather damp, therefore rust could be an issue.

Cupboard door - can't figure out what type of hinges to use

This is a door intended to go onto a basic frame that surrounds my electric meter and some fuses - the door will be sitting ON TOP OF the frame, it's not recessed (therefore the door is the same width as the frame). It's a basic MDF door, doesn't need to be anything fancy. I'm not sure what...

Generator advice needed - thinking of buying one for a small bungalow

Good point and fridge and freezer not being on all the time, hadn't thought of that. As for hiring a generator for a day to try it, I'll see what's available.

Generator advice needed - thinking of buying one for a small bungalow

Thanks very much, I used 5 just as an example. It would be under some kind of load all of the time from the fridge and freezer, the boiler only two or three times a day.

Generator advice needed - thinking of buying one for a small bungalow

Thanks again for the helpful advice, I am now curious about fuel usage - let's say that I go for a petrol generator, 5kW to power my chest freezer, fridge and oil boiler (and maybe use any remaining wattage for the LED lighting in the bungalow or to charge a smartphone or rechargeable batteries...

Wooden electricity pole - cover missing from a box on the pole, what is this?

Thanks, just managed to get through to National Grid, the issue has been logged and somebody will be out today or tomorrow. I hope that they don't want to turn off my power just to put the cover back on .......... :)

Wooden electricity pole - cover missing from a box on the pole, what is this?

I think it's some kind of fuse/cutout but not sure, here's a photo of the box and the cover that I just found near the base of the pole. I'm trying to phone National Grid to report it but of course the wait time is interminable due to all of the storm problems so will keep trying, in the...

Generator advice needed - thinking of buying one for a small bungalow

What make/model do you have? Also (just showing my generator ignorance here) does it need to be run inside a shed, etc (with a suitable exhaust outlet of course) or can it be run outside in the rain, presumably with a suitable cover? Thanks for your advice (and the same applies to everyone...

Generator advice needed - thinking of buying one for a small bungalow

Thanks - out of interest how much fuel did it consume per hour of use?

Generator advice needed - thinking of buying one for a small bungalow

After the latest storm I've endured yet another lengthy power cut - this is the final straw, I'd now like to invest in a generator. I only have a small three bedroom bungalow and am looking to mainly power the essentials - chest freezer, fridge, oil boiler and lights. Some additional 'niceties'...

12 foot field gate, how to stop it drooping?

I had in fact been thinking of a metal gate but I have one elsewhere and they're so bloody ugly. :)

12 foot field gate, how to stop it drooping?

Thanks to you all for the help and advice, that's given me something to chew on. To answer a couple of questions: a) The post has in fact just been replaced, the old one had rotted just below ground level and the guy who installed it did a lousy job and didn't use nearly enough concrete. the...

12 foot field gate, how to stop it drooping?

Can't get a photo right now as it's chucking it down with rain but it's a six bar and this is the same type in terms of appearance, the bracing, how it's put together, etc: https://www.batsfordtimber.co.uk/image/cache/catalog/Products/Gates-Posts-Fittings/11-Welsh-Gate-800x800.jpg

12 foot field gate, how to stop it drooping?

I have a 12 foot wooden field gate, it's about two years old, it seems to be a bit 'cheap and cheerful' and over the years I've had to use wood glue and long screws where some of the angled pieces are attached to the horizontals. Despite doing this it continues to very slowly droop over the...
