    Covering an unused door

Foxhole: I don't think it's a bad sentiment to shy away from destroying the original features of a 140-year-old house. A few estate agents have told me that these days buyers value anything original very highly, and pay premium prices for it, even if it means living in a house with drafty sashes...

Laminate floor threshold bars and hearth

That is the exact trim that has been damaged. I just found an offcut and it was still in the packet with the name Incizo on!

Laminate floor threshold bars and hearth

Ken, searching for stepped trim threw up this! https://www.flooringsupplies.co.uk/accessories/34/solid_oak_edge_trim?adtype=pla&keyword=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3YiD74iH2wIVlIjVCh1BnAU3EAkYAiABEgKUNPD_BwE I guess this is the correct stuff?

Laminate floor threshold bars and hearth

Evening, Ken. No. Could you give me a link to that as I have no idea what it is. Any idea on Question 1? Thanks!

Laminate floor threshold bars and hearth

I employed a firm to lay Balterio laminate flooring and they chose and fitted matching threshold bars and made an edging with mitred corners to finish the open edge where the laminate ends and the fireplace hearth starts. Both of these trims are made of a cheap and nasty "cardboardy" material...

Drilling into bare, uneven 140-year-old red bricks.

Cheers, John. Had a look at the Fischers on Amazon and wow they are horrendously expensive. These had good reviews, what do you think? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-576689-Wall-Plugs-Pack/dp/B000LFW818/ref=sr_1_63?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1526247682&sr=1-63

Drilling into bare, uneven 140-year-old red bricks.

Second one (on right) was MUCH easier. "Practice makes perfect." Used three drill bits, each bigger than the last, on each hole; brown rawlplugs, and the biggest screws that would fit through the holes in the brackets. It's been 2 whole minutes now and they have not yet fallen down! New...

Drilling into bare, uneven 140-year-old red bricks.

I'VE DONE ONE! Well, sort of. There are actually 3 holes in each bracket. I have managed to get 2 fairly tight, secure fixings, 2 reasonable fixings and 2 utterly useless ones. But when I try to pull the shelf away from the wall, it does not move, so my bodge-work has been a reasonable success...

Drilling into bare, uneven 140-year-old red bricks.

Neighbour failed to show up or ring me, and now his wife said he's taken another job on for today, without even ringing me or anything. So it's back to me to do the job :-(

    Drill bits, rawlplugs and screws.

btw How do you find these videos on YouTube? Whenever I search for anything DIY on YT all I find is Americans and Australians and their terminology and methods are too different to be of any use to me.

Thanks to you I can now fit my massive rawlplug collection into ONE ice cream tub!

    Drill bits, rawlplugs and screws.

Ah, yes that makes perfect sense. In the bin with them! I have just separated them all and I already have 200 brown ones! Plus another 100 beige ones that are exactly the same width at the mouth as the brown ones.

    Drill bits, rawlplugs and screws.

Hahaha... do they really have NO other use?

    Drill bits, rawlplugs and screws.

Yes, two rooms are drywalled over the original exterior brick wall, plus I have one stud wall that I had built. Having watched that video, all my blue plasterboard fixings are in the bin! But I have kept half the red and half the yellow ones because I still think they could be useful for...
