    Statins

In my book they are the work of the devil. I won't take anything preventative - only stuff that is actually treating something at the time.

Loft humidity after insulation and vents added

Whatever they have done, it isn't right, because the whole point of ventilation is to keep the fabric of the roof dry, which yours obviously isn't.

Loft humidity after insulation and vents added

You might be overlooking the fact that to actually take the readings you have to open the loft hatch, which lets a load of nice warm humid house air rise up in to the loft, and the cold air in the loft descend down in to the house. It could be, but the danger is then thermal inertia. If the...

Loft humidity after insulation and vents added

so call loft temp 10 degrees. saturated vapour density at 10 degrees = 9.21. X 93% = 8.56 which is the saturated vapour density at about 8 degrees. Any surface colder than that will have liquid condensation. If it's 7 degrees outside, quite likely the inner roof surface is approaching 8...

Loft humidity after insulation and vents added

If you get the physics you should be able to work it out. Sounds like the additional insulation has made the loft colder allowing more condensing surfaces.

Loft humidity after insulation and vents added

Hardly surprising. I expect that the loft isn't perfectly sealed to the house, and/or you are letting house air in to it at ~20 degrees and probably 50-60% humidity. The problem is that air at that temp and humidity will start condensing to liquid water at about 12 degrees, and of course at the...

Which way should a door swing for a small office

I'd swing in. Sometimes you might want to be in there without the door shut, and you can't do anything with that bit of wall the door would open against anyway.

    New wooden door swelling...

except Accoya.... Having made several external doors and windows for our house, I can confirm you can make them with tiny clearances and they don't change winter and summer.

    Push Fit onto Copper Pipes

Perhaps the multi-trade bathroom installer doesn't have hot work insurance? It's perhaps not a case of "can't do", but "won't do" in that situation.

Cement block 'dividing wall' in garage - Foundations needed?

Stud dividing wall? all the fixings will be in shear. You could actually glue the header to a plasterboard ceiling with grab adhesive and just pop a couple of small fixings in to counter any (unlikely) really hard impacts it might receive, and that non-structural dividing wall would still be...

Choosing a Bosch impact driver for screw driving

Big and heavy? no they are lightweight and compact. Probably the most used tool I have and used for everything from little 15mm screws for kitchen door hinges to driving 150mm coach bolts. Takes every tip and driver I could possibly need, and with adjustable torque can be dialled in for the...

    Damp / Water Ingress Problem?

I also live in a 1902 house with an early cavity. When we acquired the house, the main back room had had a coal fire every day for about 120 years (the house was built by wifes great grandfather and we know the history). The lime plaster walls of this room were sodden with condensation from...

    Blocking up two fireplaces.

This comes up so often. The question really is "what do I want to achieve". A chimney will have a natural updraft if open at the top due to the venturi effect of the wind over the open stack, so in winter, if the stack is open at the top, you draw air at 20 degrees and about 60% humidity through...

    Worktop Cracked

Tricky. Is it a failure of the product? or a failure of the installation? However, when I look at the Consentino website it says that if the 25 year warranty isn't registered it still has a 3 year warranty. If you have the invoices etc, I'd be initially talking to Consentino. If they turn round...

Choosing a Bosch impact driver for screw driving

Just about all tips you buy in a merchants are suitable for impacts. Mostly I use the ones that go in the magnetic bit holders, and I buy these usually https://www.cwberry.com/bosch-2608522187-pz2-x-25mm-extra-hard-screwdriver-bits-box-of-25. (or an unbranded equivalent in boxes of 25) The sets...

Replacement Windows - What to Look For

To give yourself an idea, run your windows through an online system like https://www.modernupvcwindows.co.uk/info-spec-windows-doors.php That'll give you an idea what you are paying for the measuring and fitting service. There is unlikely to be much of a difference in the material cost whoever...

DIY-kitchens - side panel height different size to cabinets, is it normal?

It would look odd because it would look like a door on the end of a cabinet rather than the front. This whole saga is because you have bought a kitchen of standard components for a particular model of kitchen and are now trying to install the parts in a different way to what DIY kitchens...

Choosing a Bosch impact driver for screw driving

Most (all?) impact drivers designed for construction rather than mechanics, with a 1/2" drive can also take the 1/4" hex as well. On the bosch pro linked to the torque is adjustable from gentle to fierce. The 1/4" bits get put up the middle of the 1/2" hex and are released by the red collar, the...

    Wonky wall - windowsill placement

When doing any jobs the old adage is "if it looks right, it is right". It is amazing what deviations from square/perpendicular you can get away with if there is nothing to draw the eye to the deviation. Make the front edge straight and ignore the back edge of the cill - no-one will notice
