Hi, I've seen criticism of those tools on YouTube with guys saying they'd be laughed off their building site at work if they took one, completely missing the point that they are not meant for proper bricklayers of course, but rather guys like me who aren't. For the first layer off the base it's...

Water, water everywhere..... I've been looking for an IBC for a while as a temporary water store on site until we get the mains in, and with some sort of idea of using it for rainwater collection for watering the garden and the like afterwards. When your looking for stuff on eBay sometimes being...

Neighbours Plans are right to the Edge of Boundry

Just a thought, but there is now legislation about disabled access - from what you describe, this would stop any access to your door with a wheelchair if I've understood you correctly about the distances involved. I don't know if there is any mileage in this, but maybe worth looking at. I do...

Thought I'd do a bit more about the joys of the backdrop chambers (I just think they are a simple yet elegant solution to the issue of excessive fall). We're having 2 in the end as to do it in 1 would have been just crazy deep to have been dug - as you'll see in the bottom picture, imagine one...

Is it just me or are evenings still getting darker?

I think theoretically it advances as a set rate, but weather, cloud etc makes a big difference. I reckon we're up to about 4.45p.m when it's still just usefully light up here in Northumberland. At 5.30 now it's too dark to do anything much.

I think that's a cracking lesson Bernard - a move of 1.5 metres making £2100 difference! I wonder how many people have missed out on stuff like that.

Thanks for the comments re the criticisers, and I think your idea for their reasons may be bang on the money. No, luckily for us we don't have to go under a footpath or road, which I gather can get eye wateringly expensive in the case of roads where you have to pay the council for a closure...

    Bosch Classixx Tumbledryer not heating

I'd second that, I'd certainly suspect the element first.

Services. I've included a few links in here if anyone wants to read a little more just click on the blue text. Sent off a few days ago to the water company to start off the process of getting a water supply and the foul connection approved. Luckily we are just going into a private pipe first...

Well, not so glamorous but very important, 1st stage of drains going in just now. Although we will be using a lot of soil to level the site, I suspect we are going to be left with a considerable amount of subsoil at the end. Fortunately a nearby neighbour actually wants some subsoil with clay...

Thanks for that excellent post. Lots of helpful information in there. The window fitting thing seems to come not from the house builder themselves but from the window firms sending the wrong sizes, I've read quite a few accounts of that. Yes, I plan to make use of the insulation seconds for all...

    Self-moderating tool

I think that is exactly the trolling attitude I was referring to, so thanks for the illustration. The fact you've followed me here speaks volumes doesn't it. Complete assumptions made from not knowing the full circumstances - but why immediately jump to a negative one about people you don't even...

    Self-moderating tool

Interesting idea. I've not been that long on this forum but got attacked for asking a question (along the lines of how dare I ask and do this as a DIY option and not line someone else's pockets) and odd snide remarks from one person. It kind of ruined the thread as it ended up well away from the...

Recessed LED Light (Square) - Reputable Manufacturer

I know, but saying "switch mode power supply" would get blank looks from the average layman :D. As for the RFI, as well as breaching the regs it makes them useless really, as even though likely confined to your own house, it would be a complete pain. One guy could not pick up anything at all...

Karen sorting stone from soil by Curlewhouse posted 29 Jan 2017 at 7:06 PMWell, the beam and block is all done. Today we've been sorting through stone for the dry stone waller who had expected to start between Christmas and the New Year, and because he didn't, the digging out involved in the...

Curlew, thanks so much for taking the time to post your progress, I'm following keenly. Working up my own spreadsheets at the moment. do you mind me asking what type of windows you've sprung for? Well because it is in the National Park we have to have traditional sash appearance windows...

Recessed LED Light (Square) - Reputable Manufacturer

Auroras stuff is good - expensive, but at least you know it's done to UK standards. I've used LED Hut too and their stuff is generally well sourced also and a little cheaper I think.

    Brickwork disaster

That's definitely probably the best solution in the circumstances, and there are some really nice ones on the market now, but I'd be very unhappy with builders leaving it like that in the first place. Nice dressing gown by the way :)

So we have a bit of spare topsoil and subsoil ......Topsoil & subsoil by Curlewhouse posted 21 Jan 2017 at 8:29 PM But actually, there is some landscaping to do near the very end, a big pond and so on, so we'll not really know how much is spare for quite a while (the garden end of the...
