Plumber explains what radiator numbers really mean and why you should 'leave it' at 3

A thermostat or sensor will cause something to happen when it reaches a set temperature, it does not matter what it does it could cause water to flow, or a valve to open/close, or a boiler to fire, it is still a thermostat. they are all thermostats. And today there are so many ways to...

Pardon, are you sure? I thought the T in TRV stands for thermostatic?

Driver and steersman, standard way to move large loads, and it works well. OK, but still does not make sense, it says a thermostat should not be used in a room with a thermostat, only way that can be done, is to have no thermostat in the room. Think this is actually better than the law on...

Whole house heating, or room by room?

Don't understand that bit, why set radiator to max? At the moment wife's bedroom controls overnight heating, if her TRV calls for heat, the boiler will fire, so the 3 other bedroom TRVs will only heat rooms if both they are calling for heat and wife's TRV also calling for heat. There seems to...

But that would only turn up Hive units, and would turn them up in the whole house. "hey Alexa, turn living room up to 22" would be better. I don't know how Hive works now? In the past if the wall thermostat showed over 22°C then it would not accept a demand for heat from the TRV heads, has that...

Plug in solar, what do you think?

The subject also discussed in another forum. I have concluded that balcony solar can save around £100 - £200 a year, but it may cause damage to the balcony in high winds, and clearly you need a balcony. As to battery, plug in limited to 800 watt, where professionally fitted one can cover at...

I would agree the settings are important, and it means non-programmable wall thermostat locked to a set temperature with a mechanical TRV head also locked to a set temperature, the thermostat I used, had stops to limit the range, so these were used to lock it. And they worked in unison together...

    EICR shenanigans five years later...

A meter was fitted, but they will not accept readings from it, had to have a smart meter fitted, so no one ever reads the actual meter.

    What’s going on here?

It has a loop test, so yes it will work, although the pass mark means no good for a ring final, old good for radial circuits.

The TRV and wall thermostat open and fire the boiler when the front door is opened. The radiator rather large get hot, and starts to reheat the hall, at around 16°C the TRV starts to close, but it will not fully close until it reaches 20°C and the wall thermostat is set to 19°C, so on a cold day...

I asked not to have batteries in the loft, and lucky as now not allowed, but unsure of reasons? It seems more to do with fighting a fire from some other cause, than the danger of the batteries going on fire. I was issued a compliance certificate when mine were fitted, but I do wonder if they...

I have said again and again, every home is different, what works with one home may not work with another. As to solar panels, I have been saying how I don't like the idea of balcony solar, not supporting it. As to plumbing, yes I found again, all I had been told about cost to heat DHW with...

Oh no, improved maybe, solved no. OK maybe a bee in my bonnet, I was told by so many, so many times, you don't fit a TRV to a radiator in an area with a wall thermostat, I believed it. Then I fitted a TRV in my mother's hall, with the wall thermostat, and it cured most of the problems. So...

Yes my old gas fire was the same. It was 4 kW and as built the only heating in the house, late 70's. Seem to remember 1 to 6 on the dial, and either centre two or four burners, but no thermostat. Since it did not heat whole house, it was cheap heating, idea was it would heat whole house, as...

The problem is, a loop impedance tester is an expensive bit of kit, and without it, even if there are earth wires, you have no idea to if they are connected. Parents house, built 1954, had wall lights, which should have been earthed under 13th, but that's 1955, don't know what the 12th said...

    Alcove lighting/LED strip advice

Clock sockets had a 1 amp fuse, 13 amp sockets are 13 times bigger, so need to work out what the supply is, maybe from the lights, one can fit grid switch 13 amp sockets with a fuse included, or simply mark socket lights only, can label under plug so only seen when lights are unplugged, but...

What a load of rubbish, the TRV T stands for thermostatic and stat is short for thermostatic, so you are saying the TRV should not be fitted in a room with a TRV? That is clearly nonsense. It is a problem having a thermostat on an outside wall, the wall can cool the thermostat, causing it to...

Heating experts share what the numbers on your radiator valve really mean "says Daily Express" Really? I have found the mechanical valve head has around 4°C between fully open and fully closed. Where an electronic head, more like 0.5 to 1°C. So the number to give 20°C varies depending on room...
