    Shower low pressure

While in the bathroom earlier today, I briefly heard a great bubbling noise from somewhere - couldn't locate it before it stopped. Then while using the kitchen tap, it spat and spurted for a while before normal service was resumed. I assumed the water company had been doing something, so...

    Lavatory cistern/valves etc

Thanks Terry. Yes if nothing went wrong I guess I could manage the float valve - think this one looks a bit like one I used in previous houses, from SF... The crack is behind the wodge of plumber's mate or whatever it is at the top right of the last photo, running down the side of the cistern...

    Lavatory cistern/valves etc

This lavatory has been here since the house was built 30 years ago, but I’ve only been here a few years, and am gradually repairing/replacing things. As you can see, the inside of this cistern is filthy, and my efforts to clean it have failed. It works OK, but I think it smells a bit… Anyway...

    Garage door jammed - help!

See, that's EXACTLY the sort of thing that wouldn't occur to me till it was too late. And I do need to park fairly close to it, so roller it is...

    Garage door jammed - help!

OK, panic over (Panic is my middle name) - by alternately wrenching at it, hitting it, and pressing the button, I managed to get it fully up, then down again. Doesn't sound good though, so I'm going to leave it permanently closed for now! So... any thoughts on repair (is it worth it) or...

    Garage door jammed - help!

Hope somebody knows the answer, as I don't fancy leaving the garage open all night etc... this morning I pressed the button, the door started to go up, then began to make hideous noises, and the big roll looked like it was kind of unfurling. Then it stuck solid. When I press the button now, it...

    Adjustment of conservatory door?

Thanks guys, will give it a go when I'm feeling brave, and the temperature rises above absolute zero...

    Adjustment of conservatory door?

Thanks! Yes it's just the tip which catches. If I loosen a screw, it isn't the sort of thing where little bits and pieces are likely to fall down inside the door or anything is it? I get nervous about that sort of thing

    Gas vs oil worries

I bought this bungalow to retire. It was in a real state, but what else did I have to do... but very soon two things happened: (1) the boiler (believed original since 1994 or so, and rarely if ever serviced) disintegrated into a pile of rust in the corner of the garage; (2) we had the worst...

    Gas vs oil worries

Quality - who knows? Definitely on a proper base made of 2 x 2 concrete slabs. You can see it's bleached a bit at the top, but not further down - it only gets a bit of sun in the morning I reckon...

    Gas vs oil worries

See, that's why I come here - to get educated. Now I understand the options better, I can have a more informed discussion with the installer, when that time comes... Are there any real oil tank experts out there? Is there any way at all of knowing if it's deteriorating? Thanks again everybody...

    Gas vs oil worries

Right, of course - I just thought for some reason gas ones heated the water faster (more efficient or something). I suppose maybe it depends on distance between boiler and kitchen sink too - girlfriend's apartment is on the 2nd floor, and all the oil combi boilers are in a little row, way down...

    Gas vs oil worries

Thanks – yeah, sorry, when I read back what I’ve written I always think I could have phrased it better. So the oil tank looks OK to me, but I’m not sure how I’d know… no obvious damage, or anything that looks like a crack might be developing or anything – but I don’t know exactly how they go...

    Gas vs oil worries

Here in NI, an awful lot of houses are still heated by oil boilers, as we’re a bit more spread out than eg England, so gas companies haven't felt it economic to put gas in, I suppose. Anyway, in our estate, after 30 years, now they have, and will connect for free – so I’m trying to decide. I’m...

    Adjustment of conservatory door?

Hhmmm, all seems to be parallel and correct, as far as I can tell... so can you adjust that pin at the top please?

    Adjustment of conservatory door?

Picture below. What happens is that the door jams at the top when the weather is very cold. I'm assuming it's the pointed pin on the top sticking up a tiny bit too high... I believe it's adjustable - can anybody tell me how please?

Fire safety if windows can't be opened?

So I live in a bungalow, with 3 bedrooms at the rear end of a long hallway, and living room, dining room, bathroom, kitchen at the front end. The old mahogany window frames at the rear are the only ones I haven't had replaced with modern units, and they’re leaking etc – time to go I think. But...

Not really plumbing... shower door seal?

Trying to save the daughter in law some money as usual... the seal on the bottom of her shower door started coming out in bits, which she chucked away, assuming it would be easy to get a new one. But the kind you can buy in SF etc seem to be different, having just a U-shaped top profile which...

    Is my boiler worth anything?

Being a pessimist by nature, I'm assuming I already know the answer to my question, but... here in NI we mostly have oil boilers. However, they've just piped gas into our estate, and I'm thinking about lashing out for the conversion. The government will pay for getting the gas into the property...

    Chainsaw or tradesman?

I did, yes. You get two long blades (cut up to 1') and I think two short metal ones. At the end of the day, had I been able to get hold of a tree surgeon, he'd have charged more than I paid for it - the trees were in awkward positions, embedded in the middle of pyracantha bushes etc. So very...
