Hi I am building a extension on the side of the house and need to form an opening, the architect has said that it is probably wimpey No fines but you can see the fines It looks like Tarran but I know nothing about this. I am guessing that if it gets cut into there most probably will be steel...

    Contiguous piled retaining wall

Hi Thanks for the reply Its not necessarily bad ground. I would definitely get further advise before trying to do the piling myself, in fact I wouldn't do the piling myself. I was merely wondering how much this scheme costs when compared to installing a cantilevered retaining wall? The area...

Specific chimney breast removal practicality questions?

I think this wall, if it is attached to the next door in any way would class as a party wall. I'm pretty sure it is a legal requirement to give your neighbor notice of any work that may effect their wall. The two month notice is very rarely seen out as next door usually say yeah or no within a...

Problem with structural wall changes & new RSJs

I agree with Wessex101 theres not an SE I know that would just blindly say stick a load bearing wall on top of quarry tiles and that will be ok. If it is in line with an old wall position there is obviously footing under it? Is there something missing here?

Problem with structural wall changes & new RSJs

This is an interesting post. But am I missing something? what made the SE assume that a supporting wall built randomly would be ok without foundations? I take it this new wall has not been built in an area where there once was a wall? and are you also saying that 50mm underneath your kitchen...

    Cost of re-pointing garden wall

I think it depends on who you have asked i.e. stone masons will be 100 per m. I agree with noseall 40 per m is about right no one will do it for 18 to 20. Given that they have to rebed 8m or 100 bricks I would say £600 would be fair.

    supporting existing beam

There should be a calculation that comes with the calculation for the beam that shows that the bearing is adequate it is likely that the brick work is adequate. If not then as long as the load can spread down to the foundations it may just be a case of inserting a padstone under it. A pier is...
