I’d like to take all timber out and replace with only vertical sleepers, not using sleeper posts?! Would this be possible?

Would I need the upright posts? Also how would I connect them together, as will be against patio. I’m thinking this time to have a gravel barrier around an inch between sleeper and patio for drainage ?! Any idea help here is much appreciated, will be either myself, or I’ll get somebody in ..

Thanks for the reply’s. They are rotten here and there all the way round the patio, that part is the worst. I don’t think previous owner installed it properly/ just backs onto soil….no drainage/ gravel etc.. It isn’t a full retaining wall, as when you pull away the rotten timber soil is impacted...

Can I get some advice on removing the rotten sleepers and replacing with some sort of stone/ brick work.
