    Whisky barrel wood protection

Good suggestion but I expect both will cost a small fortune. Especially glass, which would look better.

    Whisky barrel wood protection

My son bought an engraved whisky barrel top, to which I attached hairpin legs. It looks great, but I don't know what to put on it to protect it. I'm not sure if it's got an existing protector on it and I want to keep the existing colour and matt finish. I'm also unsure about the engraved areas...

    Removing stains from oak table

The new oak coffee table hasn't survived a Christmas visit from the family, and is covered in stains of unknown origin. The table has an 'unfinished' look though I expect it had been finished with something, but I'm looking for advice on how to remove these stains. Please see the attached photos.

Removing broken screw from wooden window frame

    No soldering iron unfortunately

Removing broken screw from wooden window frame

Possibly if I cut out a ring of wood at the tip of the screw, so I can get a grip on it. I suppose the damage will be covered by the handle.

Removing broken screw from wooden window frame

One of my window handles is a bit wobbly, so I removed the screw cover and found the screw head was snapped off. The small piece of thread attached is only 2mm diameter. What's the best way to get the remaining thread out of the wooden frame and repair any damage? If it's drilling then what type...

Replacement Thermostat for Ferroli MAXIMA 35 C

So a compatible receiver just connects to the existing backplate via pins without the need for any additional wiring? Then presumably there's a smart thermostat to pair with it? Would this be suitable...

Replacement Thermostat for Ferroli MAXIMA 35 C

I think you're right about the programmer. Just slightly better than the basic pin dial. Sorry for being dumb, but I didn't understand what you meant about simply clipping in a Hive. Do you mean the wireless receiver could simply replace that old programmer unit? Then the hub plugs into the...

Replacement Thermostat for Ferroli MAXIMA 35 C

Is it one that can be easily wired in by ourselves? I've seen an even cheaper version around £60 that doesn't have the hub. I presume the hub is only required if you want to control from your phone.

Replacement Thermostat for Ferroli MAXIMA 35 C

My son has a Ferroli MAXIMA 35 C boiler. At least I think that's the model from an online search. Photo attached so maybe someone can confirm. It's pretty old looking but has actually been pretty reliable, despite the poor reputation Ferroli seems to have online. He can't afford to replace it...

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

Behind these two boxes is a layer of insulation board, presumably with a layer of plasterboard on top, with a batten behind. Possibly a noggin between two studs either side. It's about 60mm from the wall face to the batten. You can just make out the insulation board and batten in the photo. I...

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

Ah OK, so using a 100mm screw or thereabouts?

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

Did you screw the insulation to the batons first, then screw the plasterboard to the insulation?

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

Ah OK. It's a bit late for drilling but the screwdriver isn't picking up sawdust. All I can add just now is a photo showing the screwdriver 65mm into the wall, and directly below it is a magnetic stud finder that's found a nail or screw. If that screw is going into a stud then how can the...

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

I'm trying to avoid making even more holes in the wall because it's wallpapered. I'll remove a socket first of all and have a look behind it and report back here.

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

I'm just completely puzzled. I can't be sure it's a stud I'm hitting 65mm in with the screwdriver in the photo, but if it is and 62.5mm insulated plasterboard has been attached to these studs, then what is the studfinder detecting at 400mm intervals on the wall? Could it be screw heads and...

    No loft I'm afraid

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

I'm in Scotland. I'll contact the local building control department.

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

I don't have the planning documents. Possibly with the council or solicitor? The external walls are stone. It's a listed building and based on an old Google maps image I suspect all that existed was the outer stone shell and slate roof. I was repairing a wall socket elsewhere in the flat and...

    65mm plasterboard. Is this possible?

Would that be like 5 layers of 12.5mm board for example? Why would it be like that with the stud so far back from the wall face?
