Just a thought from a total numpty. Would it be acceptable to put a 2 Amp socket (e.g. https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/MKK0770.html) on a lighting circuit ? If so, that would give you a connection which could only be used for currents within the circuits capability.

Robert Dyas (might be on a nearby high street) usually have fusewire on sale. To this unskilled eye, the meter looks just like the one British Gas fitted for my flat (a few years ago) supposedly as part of the Smart Meter programme.
