    Standby generator questions

Maybe that solar power switches off when there's a power cut - whereas generators tend to be turned on?

Fused spur - distance to draining board

The legal position is dealt with in the first 20 min of the C&G course . It sounds as thought Winnie didn't even make the first 20 minutes.

    Slightly burned neutral

It doesn't really matter whether it's L or N. The plug and socket still need replacing. And by the way, we don't twist the wires these days, as it make future testing harder.

Thinking of buying an oil filled radiator.

Anything except a fan or IR will heat the room from the ceiling downwards. So you won't feel much within the first hour.

    Garage power

I really don't think that diagnosing by swapping things is a safe and sensible way to go. A very quick set of measurements with readily available test equipment would find out what was at fault; MCB, or wiring from there to garage. If you aren't able to do that then I would call an electrician...

    Cooker Hood Help

I would agree with W here. When you measured this voltage it was presumably across the metal of the contacts in the junction box. At this point I would be checking that the cable coming out of the connections going to the extractor were made correctly. In other words I would take the wires out...

    Cooker Hood Help

This seems to be your only check so far. It is not very useful or meaningful I'm afraid. A voltage detector can't measure current or even 'juice', and will see voltages all over the place. With a two pole voltage measurement device you could well find a broken or badly made connection somewhere...

    Toothbrush charger socket ensuite

I looked at one of those (with the extra shaver socket), but then thought about how the toothbrush charger base looks after a few months of toothpaste dripping onto it, however careful you are. When it's a separate item it's easy to change when it gets really foul.
