    Smell from drain

I am presuming there's a gully under the sealed cover in the utility room (which I need to open to check for issues) Are you saying there should also be a trap at the inlet where the linear drain goes under the building?

    Smell from drain

I know nothing about drains so please bear with me as our drains have started stinking the garden up & the house when the doors/windows are open (internally no smell). We have a linear drain that runs around our utility and extension into a combined waste/rain water drain - red arrows in pic...

    Old lean to extension options...

i built an extension on old conservatory foundations. BC asked for trial pits on each elevation, came and had a look, and confirmed they would be happy with what was already in the ground.

    Fire doors and loft conversion

We had our loft done on our 1930s semi in December 2021. A private bc firm was happy to accept interlinked alarms in every room and fd30 in the new loft bedrooms. No other doors were changed. We’re currently having a ground floor extension and the council inspector tells me their policy is for...

    Scottish independence

There's a lot of it about :giggle:

    Scottish independence

Yeh a risk, but 1) a 1 vote majority is a win. Out means out. 2) The next Scots election probably gives them a fresh mandate to try something else.

    Scottish independence

Could be. But now appears to be the ideal time to provide cover for any pain caused by poor political decisions

    Scottish independence

Every time the pro-leave parties are voted in, they are given a fresh mandate. That's democracy too. If the voters don't want the SNP to pursue their main goal, then they are going to vote for other parties or stay at home, right?

    Scottish independence

I don't think a straight majority is particularly relevant. If enough voters give pro-leave parties control of the parliament, then by definition they have a mandate to pursue ways of leaving the UK.

    Scottish independence

Every time the Scots vote SNP, they are giving their parliament a mandate to look at ways to achieve independence... that's democracy init

Best trim to disguise connection between aluminium window & door

Yeh you’re right that’s another bit that looks untidy . I’m not liking the bottom of the vertical strip where it meets the sill. Just looks cheap.

Best trim to disguise connection between aluminium window & door

I’m having an aluminium window next to aluminium sliding door in my extension. This strip between the two looks a bit scruffy to me, considering the cost of the damn window and door. .. Is there a better way to do this? Maybe hiding the cut ends of the trim in some way?

    DIY Pool Cover

Yes that's exactly what I've seen on hot tubs. Given the size, potentially the pieces of insulation could all be cut to shape but free-floating, the tarp then hides the lot

    DIY Pool Cover

Look up lids for hot tubs. Perhaps make something similar or buy/modify 2 of them for your pool shape and size?

flat roof abutting existing pitched roof - felt detail?

Hi - we're having a flat (1/60) roof built abutting an existing garage dual pitch roof. The 1/60 direction is along the length of the pitched roof. To my layman's eyes, the existing felt on the pitched roof should be lapped over the waterproof top of the roof, in case of water ingress under the...

Can we use an in wall extractor instead of an over hob extractor hood?

I did exactly this in a kitchen extension, BC were fine with it. We never used the fan mind, as it was across on the opposite wall of the extension, what would be the point? :)
