    Chimney Pots and Cowls

Absolutely, but that gap sits sideways on. The open pots sit facing the sky like an open bucket. My cowls have a large overhanging hood and the flaunching slopes away from them. I figured this must be enough to keep most of the rain out, but I'm not confident enough to say for sure hence...

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

Thanks Stuart, appreciate the detailed reply. Two flues as you can see. The one closest in the picture doesn't serve an appliance and has no liner. It serves an open and unused bedroom fireplace. I had the cowl put on to allow that flue to breath. The liner is in the rearmost flue in my...

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

Again, happy to be schooled but how so? As in - how would the water track into the cowl? If mine let in the Niagra Falls, the open pots to the right must let in the Pacific Ocean.

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

The speculation about the mix on the flaunching. Possibly so re the fillets. However, the course of bricks I mention have a drip groove. Stack was sound when inspected and now all are fully opened and venting, so good air flow. I still don't understand how these cowls are going to admit more...

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

A lot of speculative commentary there. In my case all flaunching was removed. The mix was absolutely fine. If you look down the stack in my second picture you will see a course of protruding bricks - these have a groove on their underside to allow water to drip away from the chimney face. They...

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

A terminal is a collective term to describe an area at the ending of something, in this case a cowl. I am more than happy to be schooled on this, but I'm just trying to understand how the set up will allow more water in than usual. The hood on the cowl is wide and the flaunching slopes away -...

    Hmm I'm not convinced.

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

They are cowls and they were marketed especially for my pots. The flaunching mix used was a 3:1 mix (no aggregate added). Genuine question so that I understand - how would rain to enter the stack? Wind driven rain I'll accept as you'd get on any pot, but are you saying it would be worse in my...

    Chimney Pots and Cowls

The roofers working on our house removed 4 pots and fitted 4 cowls. Fitting them was my request as they will service working flues and keep unused flues ventilated. I also had liners put down. The question on my mind is this -- is this method of fixing acceptable? Seems strange them being...

    Open Fire - Register Plate

No, often up that way walking but I live in South Derbyshire.

    Open Fire - Register Plate

I had a long thought about all of this and decided to remove the fireplaces and replace with burners (which I'd used for a number of years before moving here). The fireplaces I took out were not original and the hearth tiles long since taken up, so no loss of history.

    Open Fire - Register Plate

Hi all, I have two open fires which are used in the Winter. Both leak gasses into the above bedrooms (which have open and unused fireplaces). I am having cowls fitted to the tops of all pots and liners put down the working flues to ensure all gases are safely extracted to the atmosphere. My...

    Outdoor Drain Blockage

Just as an update, I bought the Titan vacuum and used it to vac out as far as the hose went. I must have shifted 30-40 litres. It was a very unpleasant job, but I was impressed with the Titan. The water level dropped in the gulley but was still high so I felt a bit defeated. The next morning...

    Outdoor Drain Blockage

I've decided to just suck it all out. I have a thought as to what a lot of the blockage may be. 1. The previous owners didn't put a leaf guard on the drain pipe. 2. When we had a rear chimney stack lowered, there was a lot of debris on the roof which I think has found its way into the drain...

    Outdoor Drain Blockage

I appear to have a blockage on an outside drain. Foul water is backing up from the point pictured, which is a bottle gulley made by Osma (4D901). I'll be rodding it later to clear the suspected blockage, but I have a few questions first. - what is the purpose of the rubber bung on these units...

    Wi-Fi Access Point Question

Thanks all for replies. I bought a reel of CAT6 and ran it to a laptop in the garden. Plugged the other end into a spare LAN port on the access point and got a very good connection to the main router. Happy with the set up and pleased I don’t have to worry about manually assigning IP addresses.

    Wi-Fi Access Point Question

I should have specified! The router I have is a TP-Link Archer C2 (bought it in 2013 brand new and only opened it this weekend). I have connected it to the Virgin Hub via a LAN port, as I understood this is what’s needed if disabling DCHP server mode. I hoped I could use the other ports for...

    Wi-Fi Access Point Question

Hi all, I have a wireless modem router (Virgin Media Hub 3.0). I have used a LAN connection to bridge it to a non-modem wireless router and have disabled the DCHP server option. This has successfully extended the range of my router. I have a network requirement out in the garage and I would...

Gurgling from bath/sink - only in heavy rain

Okay I’ve located the AAV. As per the attached, it’s on the top of a stack which runs behind all the visible plumbing. This then goes into the roof void. To change the valve, it means getting onto the roof and lifting the flashing and slate. To avoid doing this, would a 40mm AAV (installed...
