We have very high water meter readings any ideas please?

If the meter is moving continually with the stop tap in the house open but stops when the stop tap in the house is closed this suggests a leak at some point after the stop tap. My father recently had a very small pinhole leak in the pipe between the stop tap at the meter in the road and the stop...

No call for central heating - problem solving

You seem to be most of the way there with fault finding. Yes you can bypass the CH part of the control unit to test, this is quick (and possibly the safest option as it doesn't rely on prodding live parts with a test meter.) Just link whatever is in the CH on terminal to live. You haven't shown...

Baxi Bermuda no CH but HW working

A 3 port valve will spring return to the hot water position. If the motor is dead that is where it will stay. If you have a volt meter test for 240V between the white and blue wires of the valve when heating is on. If 240V is present there the valve motor is faulty and it needs a new motor/valve...

Dish Washer filling with water randomly

Check the dishwasher waste pipe rises before dropping down to the drain connection or water can run back from washing machine/sink and into the dishwasher. If the pipe is positioned properly the water inlet valve could be very slowly passing water. Not fast enough to notice during the week but...

    Consumer unit keeps tripping ourlt

(Un)fortunately my toaster elements are surrounded by un-earthed metal! Dodgy 1970s American appliances. I think the later Sunbeam toasters were earthed.

Adding two extra loft lights to existing light

I quite often do this sort of thing if the lights have pathetically small terminals/wiring space where getting 2 cables in would be difficult/impossible. Some light fitting designers deserve to have their heads kicked in.

Dash pot time delay for starter overloads, was it real.

They are good, except for the fact that when the oil gets old it can become more viscous changing the delay. I have an old book here somewhere that lists different oil types to use depending on the time delay required.

    Consumer unit keeps tripping ourlt

I'd expect a little more clearance between live parts and earthed parts than the width of a crumb of bread!

    Electrolux EWX14450 washing machine

Yes, label them so you know how to put them back. Insulate the ends of the wires before trying the machine again. Insulation faults in the dryer elements cause all sorts of odd faults with these machines.

    Leaking Samsung SR-S2026CVW Fridge/Freezer

It might be stuck with ice. Defrosting the unit should free the panel. It might also solve the leak issue if the drain hole is blocked with ice.

This is a plug on a piece of hire equipment, how it was returned by a builder after he had hired it. All I've done for this photo is remove the cover. This was sent for repair with the complaint of shocks from appliance:

    Small euro/shaver socket

That is for switch modules not euro modules which are larger.

    Small euro/shaver socket

Careful, a 2 pin euro socket is not the same as a UK BS4579 shaver socket. A 2 pin euro plug will likely be a poor contact fit and get stuck in a shaver sized socket, the euro pins are much thinner and the metal contact caps overhang the pins and cause them to be stuck on the shutters of most...

    Overheating Dimplex Quantum storage heater

The sensor measurements should be fairly stable, need to be measured while disconnected from the circuit board, make sure your fingers aren't touching the meter probes as your skin resistance will skew the readings. If both sensors are at the same temperature the readings should be the same too...

    Overheating Dimplex Quantum storage heater

IIRC the tmp sensors are marked on the PCB, they are connected with small 2 pin connectors, a white one and a black one. The room temperature sensor is marked below: There are guides online how to test temperature sensors, and the expected readings for the current temperature, I would expect...

I broke the main fuse seal

If you have a 'smart' meter it will have already reported the loss of power as a fault back to HQ. If they care they might send an engineer to check why the power went down to your house but none of your neighbours. Removing the main fuse isn't allowed by normies but it's worse if you have...
