    Replace shower valve

I would fit a bar mixer using a fixing kit. https://www.screwfix.com/p/swirl-bar-valve-wall-mount-fixing-kit-chrome/8669h Remove tiles to cut out existing mixer and locate hot and cold pipes. Extend pipes and add elbows so they come straight out of the wall. Level and 150mm apart. (hot on left...

If ball valve is so great ...

If the valve was closed and numerous safety devices failed then that is a possibility. The regulations, however, have to take the worst case scenario into account even if very unlikely.

Saniflo waste direct to sewer drain

Its going to constantly spray the inside of the inspection chamber with sewage slurry so I'd say its certainly not a good idea. Almost certainly not allowed by regulations either but I don't know for sure.

    Shower head replacement

It looks like your shower has Mira Airboost. It is supposed to mix air with the water to give the effect of a more substantial shower flow. Not really convinced it works that well but it does mean that you need the correct Mira shower head. You may be able to remove the airboost tube from the...

If ball valve is so great ...

Yes its a problem. No valves are allowed on the safety vent. If you want to add a valve to the hot distribution pipe, it must go after the Tee on the downwards section of the vertical pipe.

Water meter - backwards when stopcock off

A leak down stream of the meter would result in water passing through the meter and a forward movement of the dial. Only reason I can think of for backward movement would be thermal expansion of water in the pipe if its warmer under your floor than in the water main. This would only be a tiny...

Potterton Suprima - Replace or repair?

I like the Suprima despite the PCB problems in its earlier days. However, given its age and rotted flue, I wouldn't chuck any more money at it. Too many variables to give a definite idea of price but 3k doesn't seem too far off the mark. Get alternative quotes and see how they stack up...

John guest to 15mm arrest valve

Never a good idea to conceal compression fittings and certainly not iso valves which have a habit of leaking. If you must have the fitting concealed, use a straight pushfit connector from plastic to copper and have the iso valve where you can get to it.

Potterton SUPRIMA 40L won’t turn on, trips RCD immediately :(

Better to keep both sides open so that it doesn't create a deadleg with stationary water and the possibility of stagnation and bacterial growth.

Potterton SUPRIMA 40L won’t turn on, trips RCD immediately :(

I didn't look too closely at the pipework in the pictures and didn't notice it was secondary circulation. Its job is to push hot water round a loop bringing it closer to hot outlets so that it doesn't have to come all the way from the cylinder each time a tap is opened. They are expensive as...

Can you work on valve-to-rad connections without draining?

Doing it day in day out gives you the confidence to know what should work and that the trickle of water is not going to turn into a torrent. Any pro will also be able to tell you tales of when things have gone wrong. You laugh about them later but not funny at the time. I usually have a wet vac...

Potterton SUPRIMA 40L won’t turn on, trips RCD immediately :(

The first thing the engineer should do is determine whether the fault lies with the boiler or with an external component. Pumps are a regular cause of tripping electrics. The fact that yours looks like it does points to it being the cause. The wiring looks like a poor diy job and certainly...

Can you work on valve-to-rad connections without draining?

Compression or union? If compression, ease the joint apart and put a couple of turns of PTFE round the olive. If union, a smear of jointing compound on the tapered mating surface.

Can you work on valve-to-rad connections without draining?

I regularly fit new tails to full rads. You're always going to lose some water so sheeting up and drip trays are essential. Actually, once the rad spanner is inserted on union type tails, hardly any water escapes. Have the new tail ready taped up and switch over quickly. If its a compression...
