Probably due to the waste pipe being clogged up and it doesn't take much for it to block. Fill the sink with boiling water and soap and let it go, do that a few times. Alternatively get the pipework apart and inspect/clean out.

Only reason that has happened is if it wasn't installed properly to start with or it hasn't been properly maintained by a resource that actually knows how to look after it correctly.
