Why do my kitchen lights flicker when my power shower is turned on?

As a metter of interest, was the guy who did the work a member of a certification scheme like NICIEC? Did he say he added a new circuit to your relatively new CU? If he did, did he add a new MCB, RCBO or whatever to your CU? If he did he'd probably have shown it to you before he left. I do...

Hot bath tap making a slight whistling sound when running

OK, well if the kitchen tap has good pressure then I would have thought that something between the boiler and the hot bath tap is the issue causing the restriction of flow. The way I see it, looks like either you or a heating engineer/plumber need to find the restriction. It could well be that...

Hot bath tap making a slight whistling sound when running

Sounds like a Rab C. Nesbit line :-) True though, give me washer taps any day. I've lost count of the ceramic ones that have worn out on me. But back to the topic, I'm presuming the cleaning you've done has stopped the bath tap whistling, so good news! Re the hot tap on the sink, I would have...

Hot bath tap making a slight whistling sound when running

“the other tap was also whistling” – OK so it’s possible that both taps might be susceptible to whistling for reasons unknown. Putting that aside for a minute, it seems from the video that the flow rate isn’t that rapid. I’m guessing the hot water is from a hot water cylinder and not a combi...

Hot bath tap making a slight whistling sound when running

Hi Alex, I looked at your other thread and it seems you’ve already done a swap check with another tap to no avail. Not sure if the other tap was a known good one (a non-whistler) but if it was, it seems the issue may be elsewhere. Does this tap have an isolating valve just before the tap, or...

    Dimmer lights flickering

Not sure if Tomsim knows if the dimmer causing the issue is compatible, but if he tests using a Varilight V-Pro LED (FYI, I'm nothing to do with the company), he can change the modes on it (leading edge, trailing edge etc) until he has a result that doesn't oscillate/flicker. He can then buy a...

    Dimmer lights flickering

I'd buy another dimmer to swap in and test with. Best case, you identify what the culprit is, worst case you have a decent spare dimmer.

    Dimmer lights flickering

I understand that some dimmers need a minimum load to work smoothly and flicker free. So , you might find a certain dimmer flickers with one 8W LED bulb, but if you drive say 4 of them in parallel it might run smoothly. Also, to follow on from what Eric was saying about types of LED dimmers...

Best Cat 6 Cable and how to split

We very much are Frodo. Your post 13 was an exelant presis of the kit etc. Also, a cable tester is essential as you say - also cheap as chips. Actually, if Deano is buying the patch cables, everything else is just the punchdown tool, so might not even need an RJ45 crimper.

Best Cat 6 Cable and how to split

Dean, all the above is good advice, but hope you haven’t been scared off by it. The loft does seem like the logical place for your main (and possibly only) switch as the cable layout for your size installation would be like a star, with the switch in the centre and cables to PC’s, cameras etc...

    Broadband and telephones

I'm guessing you're just demonstrating that it can be done without a router. I'm also guessing that your usual setup is using a router (or some other box) to provide a Firewall in addition to the the one included wither your OS?

Securing existing joist binder – adding additional ones

Thanks catlad. OSB yeah, I’ll probably end up doing something like that. I know it’s more pricey, but I was also toying with using 15mm ply to keep the weight down.

Securing existing joist binder – adding additional ones

Woody, as ever thanks for the insight. I had a feeling this wasn’t going to be a picnic so I’m grateful for the advice. Another quick question, given the design, would you say that the binders contribute to countering roof spread? Not sure if they'd be under tension. There are only two binders...

Securing existing joist binder – adding additional ones

Hi Woody, There’s nothing wrong with it over bedroom 1 but in the longest section, there’s a twist in it starting at the central wall that ends up with it 13° out when the shortest section is nailed to it at the overlap. This has caused the overlap joint to have a gap in it (unless it was...

    Peugeot 107 overheating component issue

Is there anything on the dashboard (temp gauge high, temp warninhg lights on etc) that shows an overheating problem. Overhating can be due to a few things like colling system, engine timing etc. You say it goes nuclear, is there any steam coming out of the radiator, pipes, coolant reservoir...

Quick question/advice needed about a roof survey please.

I’m with Daz. I would take what isn’t visible into consideration and try to negotiate. We took on a bungalow a couple of years ago that also has the underside of the roof covered in standard (non-breathable) hardboard. We knew the history of it before we bought it and knew that it had suffered...

Securing existing joist binder – adding additional ones

Deluks, Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Just a couple of questions if that’s OK. Just a few passing thoughts...any proper repair would likely involved damage to the ceiling below, and could result in cracks, potential redecorating/skimming. I kind of expect that, but it would be...

Securing existing joist binder – adding additional ones

I know this is a big post, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to give a couple of words on how they’d fix just the binder. Maybe I need to replace the whole length? Am I a million miles out with my thinking on how the fix would be done (the bullets)? Cheers all
