    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

The breaker is 32amp, the shower was just 8.5kw so barely adequate, particularly in winter. Unlikely that there will be any later additions to the circuit, but thanks for taking the trouble to post the info anyhow.

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

I’m only continuing to blather on about this because it might be useful to someone else. I bought a new back box and managed to fit it without disintegration, so the shower circuit now terminates in a socket in the loft. It’s very unlikely that I’ll ever use it, so I intend to leave the MCB for...

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

I'll be more careful with the second one, although having just checked the reviews on Screwfix ( which is something I usually do BEFORE buying) the last reviewer had exactly the same problem.

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Just confirming that I’ve had a good look at the cables again and the neutral wire is NOT much bigger than the live or earth. No idea where I got that notion from. I’ve screwed a 47mm back box to the gable wall, fed the cable into the box and connected the wires to the socket. Unfortunately I...

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Thanks. As stated above I can get all the wires in a block, and not a huge one either, so I'm pretty sure they'll fit into the terminals of a socket, though the planet-sized neutral may require some additional manipulation ;0). I've ordered a 47mm back box for the socket so there should be...

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Not that I'm aware of, though I haven't followed the cable through the loft and all the way back to the CU. When I connect the cable to the new socket I'll take a pic, though having been told by so many posters that it can't possibly be true I'm beginning to doubt whether the neutral wire is so...

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Admittedly I was working in poor light, but the neutral wire did seem considerably heftier than the others. No matter: they all fit in a block, so they’ll fit the terminals of a socket.

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Appreciate the trouble you've taken to explain all that, thanks. I'm going to go for the socket solution: after all, I've managed to get all three wires into a relatively modest sized connector block so I'm pretty sure they'll fit into the terminals of a socket. But thanks again, and in...

    Which pan connector?

Yes, and I'll post them here later, thanks.

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

I've moved sockets, I've installed spurs and outdoor sockets and I've changed light fittings, I've fitted bathroom fans and done other fairly minor bits and pieces. But putting my hands anywhere near the CU does feel like a step up. I'll stick with the socket idea, but thanks.

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Must admit, the neutral wire is pretty hefty, though the live and earth less so. But I'll give the double socket plan a shot, if only for reasons of cost.

    Which pan connector?

Final post now that the job is done. I opened up the floor and found that there's only a short length of soil pipe beneath the boards, perhaps six inches or so, before the pipe disappears into the mountain of concrete. So no chance of moving the outlet closer to the wall using bends etc and as...

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Yes, having originally dismissed that solution then literally within the last few minutes having thought about it again, I’m now more rather drawn towards the idea. Is it legal to mount a socket on timber, or would it need to be installed on the brick wall of the gable end?

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Thanks for the replies. I fully understand the argument that although there may be no legislative impediment to DIY circuit removal, common sense and considerations of personal safety weigh heavily in favour of calling in a professional. So on further reflection, that’s what I’ll do, though how...

    DIY removal of shower circuit...?

Evening all Back in March I posted a question about removing an electric shower circuit during a bathroom refurb. I had the usual helpful replies but although the refurb is done, the shower circuit survives, with the cable currently terminated in a block in the loft. Today I read a...

Toilet Waste Pipe Connection - 5" diameter where can I get a reducer?

I had a similar thing recently, replacing a pan connector that was sealed inside the floor-level soil pipe with what looked like putty. When I took the old connector away and fitted a modern flexi, the pipes fitted together perfectly without any sealant, so the putty may have been merely cosmetic.

Sewage smell from kitchen sink (Ed.)

You can. I had similar problems in my previous house: not with smells but with flooding above ground caused by collapsed and broken drains underground. I'd never done any underground drainage work in my life, but I read lots of stuff online, asked questions here and then tackled the job with, I...

    New toilet cistern

Slightly off piste, but if you are thinking of cleaning the old cistern and decide to use bleach, do it before you install the gubbins and flush well afterwards. I found out to my cost a few years ago that bleach destroys the rubber seals in cistern components and can even damage some plastic.

    Which pan connector?

Thank you. After further consideration I’ve decided to site the new WC in the same position as the old. I don't have the time or resources to properly explore other options, and in any case the close proximity of the sink unit would make the WC sitting position unnecessarily cramped if the unit...

    Which pan connector?

Ah.. not sure about the joist, will have to check. Another complication (albeit a minor one) is that the main stopcock is up against the wall in that location and will have to be accommodated by cutting away part of the unit that the cistern will sit in.Shouldn’t be visible, though.
