But often things designed down to a price can have more expensive equivalents that are designed to be long lasting. Maybe I'll hunt out a bit of aluminium and make one of my own lever arms ....... how hard can it be?

Funnily enough the door has been sitting in the same building for years and it's only warped ever so slightly. It's good enough for this particular job.

Thanks for the suggestions, I prefer the second type. However, I forgot to mention that this will be inside an outbuilding that's a bit open on two sides and the air can get rather damp, therefore rust could be an issue.

Good point and fridge and freezer not being on all the time, hadn't thought of that. As for hiring a generator for a day to try it, I'll see what's available.

Thanks very much, I used 5 just as an example. It would be under some kind of load all of the time from the fridge and freezer, the boiler only two or three times a day.

Thanks again for the helpful advice, I am now curious about fuel usage - let's say that I go for a petrol generator, 5kW to power my chest freezer, fridge and oil boiler (and maybe use any remaining wattage for the LED lighting in the bungalow or to charge a smartphone or rechargeable batteries...

What make/model do you have? Also (just showing my generator ignorance here) does it need to be run inside a shed, etc (with a suitable exhaust outlet of course) or can it be run outside in the rain, presumably with a suitable cover? Thanks for your advice (and the same applies to everyone...

After the latest storm I've endured yet another lengthy power cut - this is the final straw, I'd now like to invest in a generator. I only have a small three bedroom bungalow and am looking to mainly power the essentials - chest freezer, fridge, oil boiler and lights. Some additional 'niceties'...
