    Cataract in expansion tank

Thanks very much for this Tony! It was quite a young person who did the job. I'm glad I delayed phoning now. I'll call the plumber tomorrow...I won't mention the deposits in the pipes until they've corrected their installation of the pump.

It's definitely the other round! With the boiler audibly going, I can keep my hand comfortably on the right hand pipe but the left hand pipe is scorching hot. What does this mean? I like the light switch too, though it probably should have been replaced at the last rewire.

Hi Tony, the boiler is an Ideal Classic FF250, top and bottom pictured below. Is it possible to tell me from these pics which pipe should be hotter than which other pipe?

I'd be interested to hear your diagnosis...doesn't the magnet testing suggest the pipes need flushing (or replacing)?

    Cataract in expansion tank

That's a surprise, I've never lived in London but I was under the impression professional tradesmen were very hard to get hold of...maybe I am out of date on that. I googled 'designated flow pipe' but nothing came up. Which pipe is this, and what is the pipe it should be hotter than? And what...

I have, and hopefully learned a few plumbing secrets . My busyness stops here though; tomorrow this gets passed to the plumber. In my estimation water is the most terrifying substance known to man and I intend to go to my grave never having gone near a monkey wrench

    Cataract in expansion tank

Before I contact the plumber there is one loose end I would like to tie up. In an earlier post I mentioned the diyplumber website suggested back pumping could be caused by the pump being installed the wrong way round, sending the water in the wrong direction. This pump was installed recently...

    Cataract in expansion tank

When my son was a toddler he found a metal rod and discovered he could push it through the insulation and make nice holes  ..and to answer your other question, I will phone tomorrow. Hopefully the winter rush hasn't started. This firm usually comes within a week or so.

    Cataract in expansion tank

I've followed the advice of JohnD and others and done some investigations with a magnet. It seems to bear out the suspicion that there is a blockage in the system caused by iron deposits, which will require the services of a plumber. I'll describe what I did. I would be grateful if someone could...

    Cataract in expansion tank

JohnD this is looking positive! I turned the pump setting to medium and although there is still hot water draining into the expansion the rate is far less....not much more than a trickle...I'll keep an eye on it and find the magnet tomorrow...think I know where it is. Answer to your question is...

Is this safety vent some sort of tap or valve that's meant to be closed?

    Cataract in expansion tank

Thanks Steelmasons....and I've just found something else on the internet; one of the manifestations of the pump being set too fast is air build up in the radiators. Last week I noticed one of the downstairs radiators was tepid and when I bled it it was hissing air for about five minutes, so...

    Cataract in expansion tank

One more thought....googling took me to a site called diyplumbing.co.uk. According to this the most likely causes of Pumping Over are pump speed too high (already mentioned) and 'The pump has been installed the wrong way, and is directing water the wrong way around the system'.Can I diagnose the...

    Cataract in expansion tank

More info...I've spotted a couple more taps in the airing cupboard I didn't notice before; one below the pump, the other marked 'c/w feed c/heating'. I still have a suspicion that one of these various taps is incorrectly open or shut...if someone can confirm the correct setting for each I can...

    Cataract in expansion tank

Hi Gigz, the water level in the feed and expansion tank is five and a quarter inches. For pump speed, see photo above.

Just to add another little bit of information...if I press on the float in the feed and expansion tank water gushes through the valve, so at least one of the taps in the photo immediately above is open.

To complete the picture, I've gone into the loft and had a look round. I can only see two taps, both near the expansion tank, which is visible behind them in the picture:
